Headline newsUNIVERSITY DISTINGUISHED SCHOLAR AWARD RECIPIENTS RECOGNIZEDThe following are recipients of the 2008 University Distinguished Scholar Award: John Byrd, D. Warren Brown Designated Professorship in Leukemia Research, College of Medicine; Peter Culicover, professor of Linguistics, College of Humanities; Russell Fazio, Harold E. Burtt Chair in Psychology, College of Social and Behavioral Sciences; John Kagel, professor of Economics, College of Social and Behavioral Sciences; C.K. Shum, professor of Earth Sciences, College of Mathematical and Physical Sciences; and Caroline Whitacre, Department of Molecular Virology, Immunology and Medical Genetics, Vice Dean, College of Medicine. The Distinguished Scholar Award, established in 1978, recognizes exceptional scholarly accomplishments by senior professors who have compiled a substantial body of research, as well as the work of younger faculty members who have demonstrated great scholarly potential. TODAY: TEST OF THE EMERGENCY NOTIFICATION SYSTEMThere will be a test of the Buckeye Alert System at 7 p.m. today (4/8). At that time, the system will be activated and all Columbus campus telephones and any registered cellular telephones will begin to receive a voice or text message clearly identified as a test. Additionally, messages will be broadcast on the osu.edu Web site and through a mass e-mail to all Ohio State e-mail account holders. The test is being conducted to determine the effectiveness of the university’s emergency notification system. OARDC HOSTS ANNUAL RESEARCH CONFERENCE APRIL 17Faculty, staff and graduate students are invited to register for the 2008 Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center Annual Research Conference, to be held from 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Thursday (4/17) on Ohio State’s Wooster campus. The conference theme is “Recasting Our Agbioscience Research Agenda: Integrated Projects,” and will include a keynote presentation by Jan Weisenberger, senior associate vice president for research at Ohio State. Register online OHIO STATE TO HOST STATE SCIENCE OLYMPIAD APRIL 12Continuing Education will host Ohio’s 23rd annual Science Olympiad on Sunday (4/12), which brings more than 1,300 sixth-12th-grade students, teachers and parents to various locations across OSU's Columbus campus. Sponsored by Ohio State and a grant from the Science Education Council of Ohio, the event is credited with sending many of the top math and science students in the country to the national tournament. The university also provides judges and financial support from the colleges of Engineering; Biological Sciences; Math and Physical Sciences; Education and Human Ecology; Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences; and the Department of Naval Military Science. Read more > UAFYE HOSTS SPURLOCK SCREENINGS TODAY, LECTURE APRIL 10The Office of Undergraduate Admissions and First Year Experience is welcoming Morgan Spurlock to campus as the First-Year Distinguished Speaker. Today (4/8), UAFYE will be screening Spurlock's "30 Days" at 7 p.m. and "Super Size Me" at 8 p.m. at the Gateway's Landmark Theater. Both screenings are free and open to the public. Contact: schultz.173@osu.edu CRITICAL DIFFERENCE GRANT APPLICATIONS AVAILABLEProfessional Development and Women of Color Advancement Grants are available for women faculty and staff continuously employed by Ohio State for at least one year, and students (graduate/professional students with a 3.0 GPA and undergraduates with a 2.5 GPA). Grants can be used for research, supplies, dependent care, travel, etc. Significant financial need is a key consideration. Applications are due Thursday (4/17). Apply online. Contact: hornsby.1@osu.edu or 292-2800 TUTTLE PARKING LOT TO CLOSE PERMANENTLY APRIL 28In connection with the construction of the new 1,400 space Lane Avenue Parking Garage and Student Academic Services building, the Tuttle parking lot, located just north of the Fisher College of Business, will close permanently on Monday (4/28). The loss of 400 surface parking spaces during the construction will impact daily parking availability in the area. Motorists that normally park in the North Campus area should anticipate parking shortages and are encouraged to arrive on campus early. A list of parking alternatives during the construction, including the new "Tuttle Shuttle" CABS route, is available online. WYKLE TO PRESENT COLLEGE OF NURSING'S FRITZ LECTUREMay Wykle, dean and professor of the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Case Western Reserve University will present the OSU College of Nursing Edna L. Fritz Lecture on Wednesday (5/7). Wykle, the first African American dean of the school, will present “Celebrating our Cultural Heritage as We Age.” Seating is limited.
