Headline news2008 FACULTY AWARDS FOR DISTINGUISHED UNIVERSITY SERVICEThe following are recipients of the 2008 Faculty Award for Distinguished University Service: Gordon Aubrecht, II,
professor
of Physics, Marion campus; Liang-Shih Fan,
professor
of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering; and Richard Herrmann,
director, Mershon Center for International Security Studies and professor of Political Science. The award honors faculty members whose contributions to the development and implementation of university policies and programs through non-administrative roles have been extensive and have made documentable impact on the quality of the university. The recipients also have continued to provide effective teaching and have maintained an active program of research, scholarship or creative work. A program and reception will be held today (4/9). MOORE TO SERVE AS DIRECTOR OF CENTER FOR AFRICAN AMERICAN MALESJames L. Moore III, a national expert on Black males in education, has been named the first director of the Todd Anthony Bell National Resource Center on the African American Male at Ohio State. Created by the Office of Minority Affairs in 2006, it is one of the few academic centers in the United States to focus specifically on African American males.
Moore will expand the center's mission, which is to understand and facilitate academic achievement, as well as professional, leadership and personal development in pre-collegiate, undergraduate, and post-graduate African American males. Read more >
TODAY: TV CREW FROM CHINA TO VISIT OHIO STATE CAMPUSA producer and film crew from China will visit Ohio State today (4/9) and Thursday (4/10) to work on a story on the success of the university’s Chinese Language Program, and its ability to yield an unprecedented winning streak in the international Chinese Bridge Competition, a highly advance Chinese language contest. Ohio State has compiled an unprecedented record of three first-place wins, one second-place win and one "best talent performance" win. CAREER SERVICES AWARD NOMINATIONS SOUGHTThe University Career Services Committee, an organization of university professionals committed to responding to the career development needs of students at Ohio State, is seeking nominations for the annual UCSC Career Services Award that recognizes faculty and staff who support student career development. Nominees should work regularly with students individually or in groups to promote career development and demonstrate leadership in supporting career development, however they must hold a university position outside of Career Services. The award will be presented on Wednesday (5/28). Contact: Kustis.1@osu.edu WALIAULA TO ADDRESS SITUATION IN KENYA APRIL 11Ken Walibora Waliaula, a doctoral candidate in Comparative Studies at OSU will present "Kenya: Elegy of a Nation that Never Really Was" from noon-1 p.m. Friday (4/11) in 122 Oxley. In a talk that interrogates Kenya's conception of itself as a nation, Waliaula will address the roots of the current situation and attempt to offer a diagnosis of what ails Kenya. Contact: cas@osu.edu DEPARTMENT OF SPANISH AND PORTUGUESE SYMPOSIUMThe Department of Spanish and Portuguese is hosting the 11th Annual OSU Symposium on Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian Literatures, Cultures, and Linguistics, “(Re)defining Identities in Moments of Transition” on Friday (4/18) and Saturday (4/19), with keynote speakers Rocío Quispe-Agnoli, professor of Literature, Michigan State University and Richard Cameron, professor of Linguistics, University of Illinois at Chicago. The symposium focuses on speed and conditions in which humans move today as a reflection of an increasingly globalized society. Registration is $20 for faculty, staff and students. ANNUAL QUILTING DAY TO BENEFIT BREAST CANCER PATIENTSThe volunteer Stitching Sisters of the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute have rescheduled their fourth annual “Quilting Day” for 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday (4/19) at the Haimerl Center, 1421 Morse Road (includes lunch). The event was originally set for Saturday (3/8), but was cancelled due to snow. Lap quilts sewn during the retreat are given to breast cancer patients receiving chemotherapy at JamesCare in Dublin.
