DOCTORAL PROGRAM ASSESSMENT TO HELP HARNESS POTENTIAL

Twelve of Ohio State’s doctoral programs are now recognized as the best at the university after the completion of the far-reaching Doctoral Program Assessment led by Pat Osmer, vice provost for graduate studies and dean of the Graduate School. “A review like this is unprecedented at an institution of our size and stature,” Osmer said. “It was thorough and rigorous and was taken very seriously because high-quality doctoral programs are a key to the overall strength of the university. Strengthening these programs is the primary reason for the assessment.” Read more >

TODAY: ADVANCES IN VETERINARY MEDICINE DAY

The public is invited to attend Veterinary Medicine's annual Research Day, taking place today (4/10). Posters will be on display from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. A lunchtime awards ceremony in the Veterinary Hospital Auditorium from noon-2 p.m. will include a keynote address delivered by Natasha Olby, associate professor of neurology at North Carolina State University's College of Veterinary Medicine. AUTHOR HARRISON TO SHOW 'LINGUISTICS' TODAY

The movie "The Linguists," official selection at Sundance Film Festival (2008), will be shown by K. David Harrison, the linguist featured in the film, from 7:30-9 p.m. today (4/10) in 1000 McPherson. Harrison will present the film today and will lecture on "Dying Languages" at 3:30 p.m. Friday (4/11) in 20 Page Hall. These events are hosted by the Undergraduate Linguistics club "The Underlings." ANNUAL VET MED OPEN HOUSE APRIL 12

The College of Veterinary Medicine will hold its annual Open House from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday (4/12) for middle school, high school or college students considering a career in veterinary medicine, and parents and friends. KIRWAN INSTITUTE INTRODUCES FIRST QUARTERLY FILM SERIES, CO-SPONSORS SYMPOSIUM

As an introduction to its quarterly film series, the Kirwan Institute is co-sponsoring the 11th Annual OSU Symposium on Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian Literatures, Cultures, and Linguistics, “(Re)defining Identities in Moments of Transition,” on Friday (4/18) and Saturday (4/19). STUDY ABROAD GRANT OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE

Faculty are encouraged to inform undergraduate and graduate students that International Affairs is currently coordinating four study abroad grant opportunities that have a deadline of Friday (5/9). The various scholarships provide funding between $500 and $1,000 for short-term and quarter/summer long-term study abroad programs. Studying abroad enables students to gain a sense of independence, become more confident, and acquire valuable skills in preparation for today’s job market. OSU MANSFIELD'S 2008 FREEDOM AND SOCIAL JUSTICE SPEAKER

Stanford University historian Clayborne Carson will deliver "Martin Luther King, Jr.: His Inspiring Life, Lessons, and Legacy" at 7 p.m. Tuesday (4/22) in downtown Mansfield's Renaissance Theatre. In 1985, at the invitation of Coretta Scott King, Carson established the Martin Luther King, Jr. Research and Education Institute, housed at Stanford University.
