THREE FROM OSU NAMED 2008 GUGGENHEIM FELLOWS

Three Ohio State faculty members are among the 2008 Guggenheim Fellowship Award winners announced recently. The winners were selected from almost 2,600 applicants for awards totaling $8.2-million, according to a Guggenheim news release (www.gf.org/April022008.html). OSU faculty named are: Ovidiu Costin, professor of Mathematics; Judith Mayne, Distinguished Humanities Professor of French; and Ardine Nelson, associate professor of Art. Guggenheim Fellows are appointed on the basis of stellar achievement and exceptional promise for continued accomplishment.

USAC PRESENTS STAFF COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS REPORT

The University Staff Advisory Committee presented its Staff Compensation and Benefits Report presentation to the administration recently, which contained 26 recommendations, based on 636 responses to 1,500 random surveys sent to staff. UNIVERSITY POLICE INTRODUCE NEW CRIME PREVENTION VIDEO SERIES

The University Police Division has joined forces with the creative and cutting edge student comedy group 8th Floor Improv to produce a series of crime prevention videos. The videos feature current topics and tips on campus safety. The first video in the series, “Unlocked Doors” addresses the issues of theft and burglaries. Comments or feedback are welcome and can be registered online.

GET HELP TO ENHANCE STUDENT LEARNING WITH TECHNOLOGY

The TELR Expertise Grant program enables faculty to collaborate with TELR eLearning consultants to develop their ideas for teaching and learning with technology. Faculty can request from 20 to 100 hours of TELR staff support, plus up to $10,000 to support instructional innovation. Up to two projects, twice per year, can be supported. FISHER COLLEGE HOSTS BIG TEN MBA CASE COMPETITION

MBA teams from all 11 schools in the Big Ten conference will battle on the Fisher College of Business campus in the 16th annual Big Ten MBA Case Competition, Thursday (4/10)-Saturday (4/12). Fisher launched the annual competition almost 15 years ago to provide first-year MBA candidates an opportunity to put their skills to work while grappling with real-world business issues. PHI BETA DELTA ANNUAL CONFERENCE APRIL 16-19

Ohio State is serving as the host institution for the 2008 Phi Beta Delta Annual Conference, to be held Wednesday (4/16)-Saturday (4/19) at the Crowne Plaza in downtown Columbus. Two days of workshops are planned based on the conference theme of "Different Heritages, Common Humanity." Richard Herrmann, director of the Mershon Center for International Security Studies, is the featured luncheon speaker on Friday (4/18). STUDY ABROAD GRANT OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE

Faculty are encouraged to inform undergraduate and graduate students that International Affairs is currently coordinating four study abroad grant opportunities that have a deadline of Friday (5/9). The various scholarships provide funding between $500 and $1,000 for short-term and quarter/summer long-term study abroad programs. Studying abroad enables students to gain a sense of independence, become more confident, and acquire valuable skills in preparation for today’s job market. Ohio State offers more than 100 programs in 40 different countries. Apply online (click on Grants).

UNIVERSITY HOUSING SEEKS OWL CO-CHAIRS

University Housing is seeking two student leaders who are committed to implementing the Ohio State Welcome Leader Program for Fall 2008. Responsibilities include the planning and implementation of the OWL Program, co-chairing the planning committee, coordinating training for staff members, record keeping and budgeting. MOTHERS ACTING UP EVENT SET FOR APRIL 22

Juliana Forbes, co-founder of Mothers Acting Up (www.mothersactingup.org), a national group that advocates on behalf of the world's children, will headline a free public meeting of the group at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday (4/22) at the Fawcett Center Auditorium. The event is co-sponsored by the Association of Staff and Faculty Women; The Working Mothers Support Group; The Women's Place; Human Resources, Work Life; The Multicultural Center; Research Institute on Women, Gender and Public Policy and OSU Leadership Center.
