Cleveland Ave. Fingerhut will provide an overview of the strategic plan and moderate a discussion focused on college affordability with a panel that includes Ohio State Provost Joseph Alutto. FRIEDMAN TO DELIVER DISTINGUISHED LECTURE APRIL 23Harvey Friedman, Distinguished University Professor of Mathematics, will deliver a University Distinguished Lecture, “Logic: Interdisciplinary Adventures in Mathematics, Philosophy, Computer Science and Education” at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday (4/23) in the Wexner Center Film/Video Theater. Friedman is a primary contributor to the Syrus Project, which aims to develop software that will teach undergraduate computer science students at Ohio State the logical reasoning they need to succeed. Read more > SCHNEIDER RECIPIENT OF 2008 HARVEY A.K. WHITNEY LECTURE AWARDPhilip J. Schneider, clinical professor and director of the Latiolais Leadership Program at Ohio State's College of Pharmacy, has been named the recipient of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists 2008 Harvey A.K. Whitney Lecture Award. Schneider’s current teaching and research are focused on improving the medication use process and improving medication use safety. He will receive the award on June 10 during ASHP's Summer Meeting in Seattle. Read more > OHIO STATE LUNG EXPERTS USING NEW METHOD FOR DIAGNOSISInterventional pulmonologists at the OSU Medical Center are using an improved and more efficient technique to diagnose lung cancer. Attached at the tip of the bronchoscope, an ultrasound probe identifies the location of the cancerous masses in a patient’s chest, allowing for an accurate biopsy, or tissue sample, under ultrasound guidance. Traditionally, chest biopsies were obtained through a small incision in the neck. The new technique is performed as an outpatient procedure with minimal, conscious sedation. Read more > OHIO STATE STUDENT-ATHLETES TOP 3.0 MARK WINTER QUARTEROhio State Student-Athlete Support Services released its 2008 Winter Quarter Academic Recap for Student-Athletes on Thursday (4/10), announcing the collective grade-point average for Buckeye student-athletes of 3.1 and totaling 48 individuals with a perfect 4.0 GPA. Of the 892 student-athletes active on sport rosters, 519 (58 percent) held at least a 3.0 mark in the classroom. The 3.1 GPA for student-athletes was a shade above the overall student body winter GPA of 2.95. Vernon Ave. The speaker is Ruth D. Peterson, Distinguished Professor of Social and Behavioral Sciences, professor of Sociology and director of the Criminal Justice Research Center at Ohio State. Read more > RETIREMENT CHOICES FORUM SET FOR APRIL 16Human Resources will offer a forum from noon-1 p.m. Wednesday (4/16) for newly hired faculty and staff to help with decisions regarding their retirement choices under ARP/OPERS/STRS. The forum will take place in Office of Human Resources, 1590 N. High Street, Suite 430, and is designed for faculty and staff who have an appointment of at least 75 percent FTE and have been with the university for less than 120 days.
