Headline newsOSU TO HOST SUSTAINABILITY CONFERENCE MAY 16-17Ohio State's agricultural campus will host "Sustainability Now! Strategies for Personal and Community Action" on Friday (5/16) and Saturday (5/17). The conference has two major focus areas: how people can live in a more sustainable way in their day-to-day living, and how communities can build infrastructure and promote more sustainable living among residents. The conference begins Friday evening with a keynote address by Jim Merkel, author of Radical Simplicity. Read more > MEEZAN ELECTED PRESIDENT OF NATIONAL SOCIAL WORK RESEARCH INSTITUTEBill Meezan, dean of Ohio State's College of Social Work, has been elected president of the Institute for the Advancement of Social Work Research and will begin serving a three-year term beginning Tuesday (7/1). IASWR was founded in 1993 by five national professional organizations that represent the social work practice and education communities, to fulfill recommendations from a 1991 report adopted by National Institute of Mental Health’s advisory council, which highlighted the need to strengthen social work research resources. Read more > TODAY: WINSTEAD TO PRESENT HUMANITIES INAUGURAL LECTUREKaren Winstead, OSU professor of English, will deliver “What's So Good (or Bad) About Saints?” at 4:30 p.m. today (4/17) at the Faculty Club. The lecture is part of the College of Humanities Inaugural Lecture Series that honors Humanities faculty who have obtained the rank of full professor, and provides the opportunity to present their work and research interests to fellow college faculty and other university guests. Read more > IMAKAWA TO PRESENT ANIMAL SCIENCES LECTURE TODAYKazuhiko Imakawa, faculty member at the University of Tokyo in the Veterinary Medical and Animal Resource Science Laboratory of Animal Breeding, will deliver “Molecular Analysis of Regulation of Fetal Implantation” at 4 p.m. today (4/17) in 212 Animal Sciences. The lecture will be video linked to the Wooster campus. The Department of Animal Sciences is hosting Imakawa's visit to campus, during which he will meet with graduate students in reproductive physiology. Stop by today (4/17) as ReadAloud partners with the Library Diversity Committee for a celebration of Hispanic culture. Contact: 292-2594. Read more > 2008 MIDWEST SLAVIC CONFERENCE APRIL 17-19The 2008 Midwest Slavic Conference begins today (4/17) with a reception from 6-9 p.m. at the Blackwell Hotel. Charles Wise from the John Glenn School for Public Affairs will deliver the keynote address. Friday (4/18) and Saturday (4/19) will have full days of panels on various topics related to Russia, Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and the Caucasus. The conference is open to all students, staff and faculty with an interest in the region, as well as the general public. Read more > PULITZER PRIZE-WINNING HISTORIAN TO LECTURE APRIL 18The Alumni Scholars Program is presenting Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Edward J. Larson for a talk on "Magnificent Catastrophe: The Tumultuous Election of 1800, America's First Presidential Election" at 3:30 p.m. Friday (4/18) in 014 University Hall. Larson, the Richard B. Russell Professor of History and Talmadge Professor of Law at the University of Georgia, is the author of five major books, including Summer for the Gods: The Scopes Trial and America's Continuing Debate Over Science and Religion, which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1998. "Documenting Animal Domestication: New Genetic and Archaeological Paradigms" will be held in 125 Scott Lab, with a reception to follow in the Atrium in Derby Hall. Read the newsletter TELR ACCEPTING GRANT APPLICATIONS; INFO SESSION APRIL 23TELR is accepting applications through Thursday (5/1) for a new initiative to promote eLearning experimentation at Ohio State. The Expertise Grant program enables faculty to collaborate with TELR eLearning consultants to develop and test their ideas for teaching and learning with technology. Faculty can request from 20 to 100 hours of TELR staff support, as well as up to $10,000 in funding, to support instructional innovation.
