Headline newsGEOGRAPHY PROFESSOR HONORED FOR LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENTLarry Brown, Distinguished University Professor and former chair of the Department of Geography at Ohio State, is the recipient of the Association of American Geographers Lifetime Achievement Honors Award, in recognition of his extraordinary vision and leadership in the field of geography. Brown’s career includes innovative research, superb mentoring of students and colleagues, and distinguished service at Ohio State and to the AAG. His work has played a significant role in the development of contemporary geographic thought in the areas of population movement, race/ethnicity in U.S. metropolitan areas, innovation diffusion, and Latin American and Third World development. FIRST YEAR EXPERIENCE HOSTS TALK WITH GREGORY WILLIAMSGregory Williams, the author of last fall’s Buckeye Book Community selection, Life on the Color Line: The true story of a white boy who discovered he was black, will speak at 7 p.m. Thursday (4/24) in the Event Place at Landmark’s Gateway Theater (located in the South Campus Gateway). Tickets are available in 120 Enarson Hall during regular business hours. Williams, former dean and Carter C. Kissel Professor of Law at the Moritz College of Law, is currently president of the City College of New York. The event is sponsored by First Year Experience. Contact: barnes.269@osu.edu INHERITED CANCER MUTATION IS WIDESPREAD IN AMERICAA gene mutation responsible for the most common form of inherited colon cancer is older and more common than formerly believed, according to a recent study conducted by scientists at the OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center and Creighton University. The findings provide a better understanding of the spread and prevalence of the American Founder Mutation, a common cause in North America of a hereditary cancer syndrome called Lynch syndrome. People with the syndrome have a high risk of developing cancers of the colon, uterus and ovaries. Read more > OPERATION FEED STARTS TODAYThe Columbus campus will conduct the annual communitywide food drive and fundraising event to help provide nutritious meals for homeless and low-income residents in central Ohio today (4/21)-Friday (5/16). Operation Feed will help collect critically needed non-perishable food for distribution to 243 food pantries, soup kitchens, and emergency shelters in eight central Ohio counties. AUTHOR GRANT TO DISCUSS LATEST BOOK APRIL 23Stephanie Grant, visiting writer at Duke University, will be reading from and discussing her new novel, "Map of Ireland" (Scribner, 2008), at 4 p.m. Wednesday (4/23) in 311 Denney Hall. The novel is a coming-of-age and coming-out story set in South Boston in 1974 during the class and race conflicts that arose over forced busing to desegregate schools. A book signing and reception will follow the talk. Zewail, Linus Pauling Professor of Chemical Physics and Professor of Physics, California Institute of Technology, will deliver a public lecture, "Mysteries of Time.” Zewail won the 1999 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his pioneering developments in the world of femtoscience, which explores the ultrafast dynamics of molecular processes.
