Headline newsINTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR OHIO STATE’S WETLANDOhio State’s Wilma H. Schiermier Olentangy River Wetland Research Park has won formal designation as the 24th Wetland of International Importance in the USA. The designation places the site on the internationally renown Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance, the first one in Ohio and one of the first in the Midwest. Bill Mitsch, director of the ORWRP, will be available to discuss the importance of the recognition at 10 a.m. today (4/22) - Earth Day - at the wetland, 352 W. Dodridge St. To be added to the Ramsar List, the designation is made initially by the U.S. government and then confirmed by the Ramsar Secretariat, headquartered in Switzerland. OSU LAUNCHES SEARCH FOR NEW VICE PROVOST TO LEAD GLOBAL STRATEGYOhio State has initiated a search to fill the newly created position of vice provost for global strategies and international affairs. This vice provost will lead the development of the university’s evolving global strategy and shape an office of international affairs that will highlight Ohio State’s eminence in research and teaching on a global scale. The search will be national in scope, though applications from qualified internal candidates are expected and encouraged. The search committee is chaired by Daniel Sedmak, executive vice dean of the College of Medicine. Its members are Carole Anderson, vice provost for academic policy and faculty resources; Matthew Platz, interim dean, College of Mathematical and Physical Sciences; W. OHIO STATE PROFESSOR HONORED FOR LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT IN ANTHROPOLOGYClark Spencer Larsen, chair and professor of the Department of Anthropology at Ohio State, is the recipient of the American Association of Physical Anthropologists’ Gabriel W. Lasker Distinguished Service Award for outstanding service to the field of anthropology and to the AAPA. Larsen is a nationally and internationally recognized authority on bioarchaeology and is the co-director of Ohio State’s History of Global Health Project, an international collaboration involved in the study of ancient skeletons from all continents in order to track health changes. Friedman is a primary contributor to the Syrus Project, which aims to develop software that will teach undergraduate computer science students at Ohio State the logical reasoning they need to succeed. Leader is the 2008 Glimcher Visiting Professor at the Knowlton School of Architecture. His exhibit, Compost, is also on display in the KSA Banvard Gallery. The College of Dentistry will provide free oral cancer screening exams from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday (4/25) at the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery clinic on the second floor of Postle Hall.
