SOLUTION TO GLOBAL FOOD CRISIS IS MANAGING NATURAL RESOURCES

The world may be on the verge of a second Green Revolution, says Ohio State soil scientist Rattan Lal. But while the original pulled people from the brink of starvation using genetics, he believes the success of the current movement will be rooted in careful management of Earth’s natural resources. Rattan Lal, a researcher with OARDC and world-renown for his work in sustainable management of soil and natural resources, said seed germplasm to improve crop production won’t be useful if soil, water and climate aren’t carefully managed and conserved. TODAY: CENTER FOR RETROVIRUS RESEARCH CAREER AWARD, LECTURE

Susan R. Ross, the 2008 recipient of the Center for Retrovirus Research Distinguished Research Career Award, will deliver "Co-evolution of a Virus and its Host: the Mouse as a Model for Understanding Virus-host Interactions" at 4 p.m. today (4/24) in the Veterinary Medicine Academic Building, Wexner Auditorium. AFRICAN WETLAND SOCIAL SCIENTIST TO LECTURE TODAY, APRIL 25

Barbara N. Ngwenya, a visiting scholar and wetland social scientist at the Wilma H. Schiermeier Olentangy River Wetland Research Park, will present seminars today (4/24) and Friday (4/25) at 103 Kottman Hall. Ngwenya, senior research fellow and head of the Research Training Unit at the Okavango Research Centre, Botswana will deliver "An Overview of Research Opportunities and Challenges at the Okavango Research Center" at 3:30 p.m. today, and "Children Fishing for Survival in the Okavango Delta" at 3:30 p.m. Friday. Carol K. Hall, Camille Dreyfus Distinguished University Professor, North Carolina State University will present the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering's 2008 William G. Lowrie Lectures on Thursday (5/1) and Friday (5/2). "Thermodynamic and Kinetic Origins of Alzheimer's and Related Diseases: A Chemical Engineer's Perspective," will be delivered at 11:30 a.m. Thursday in 207 Koffolt Lab, while "Confessions of an Ordinary Teacher - Dealing with the Big Fish," is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday in 330 Koffolt Lab. HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVISM - HERE AND AROUND THE WORLD APRIL 30

Aron Hier will present "Human Rights Activism - Here and Around the World" at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday (4/30) at OSU Hillel, 46 E. 16th Ave. As a member of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, Hier works on confronting anti-Semitism, hate and terrorism, promoting human rights and dignity, standing with Israel, defending the safety of Jews worldwide, and teaching the lessons of the Holocaust for future generations. WELLNESS COLLABORATIVE HOSTS WOMEN’S HEALTH FAIR MAY 1

In celebration of Women's Health Month, the Wellness Collaborative, comprised of health and wellness groups across campus, is sponsoring a woman's health fair from 4-7 p.m. Thursday (5/1) at the RPAC. Faculty, staff and students are invited to learn about resources and services available to women, take part in healthy cooking demonstrations and participate in panel discussions. The event is free but reservations are encouraged. RSVP online or call 292-1894. Faculty and staff can earn points toward the Your Plan for Health Incentive Program by attending this event.

WOSU TV AIRS CHEFS IN THE CITY AND TRAVEL, LEISURE, AND HOME AUCTION

From 8-11 p.m. today (4/24) WOSU TV will air Chefs in the City, an event offering great cooking tips from central Ohio’s leading chefs along with Chef Joanne Weir. The event will feature a live auction where viewers can bid on items including gift baskets, appliances, cookbooks, and gift cards from local restaurants and businesses. On Friday (4/25) and Saturday (4/26), WOSU TV will air the Travel, Leisure, and Home Auction from 7-11 p.m. offering more opportunities for viewers to bid on items, including a paver patio, gift cards, art, trips, and performances. 2008 BARNETT SYMPOSIUM SET FOR APRIL 25

The 2008 Lawrence and Isabel Barnett Symposium explores Artists and Creative Enterprise in Columbus from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday (4/25) at the OSU Urban Arts Space, 50 W. Town St. Hosted by the College of the Arts, Department of Art Education and Graduate Program in Arts Policy and Administration, the event will examine the career pipeline for arts professionals in Columbus, examples of arts enterprises in development, and the dynamics of the creative work environment. FACULTY CLUB ART AUCTION SET FOR FRIDAY

The Faculty Club's fourth annual charity art auction on Friday (4/25) will include approximately 150 artworks and university collectible items. The preview and silent auction will start at 6 p.m. and the live auction will begin at 7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. John Behling, professor emeritus of social work and a watercolor artist, is the auction's honorary chair. Read more >

TUTTLE PARKING LOT TO CLOSE PERMANENTLY APRIL 28

In connection with the construction of the new 1,400 space Lane Avenue Parking Garage and Student Academic Services building, the Tuttle parking lot, located just north of the Fisher College of Business, will close permanently on Monday (4/28). The loss of 400 surface parking spaces during the construction will impact daily parking availability in the area. A list of parking alternatives during the construction, including the new "Tuttle Shuttle" CABS route, is available online.
