Headline newsSTARKOFF SELECTED AS OHIO STATE'S NEXT CIOKathleen Starkoff has been selected to become Ohio State's Chief Information Officer. Subject to approval by the Board of Trustees, her appointment is effective on Monday (6/16). She will replace Mike Veres, who has served as the interim CIO since last August. Starkoff's expertise and experience have included serving as the Group Vice President and Chief Technology Officer for Limited Brands, Inc., where she provided leadership related to shared services implementation, transformation solution design, technology organization, applications development and operations and enterprise risk management for an entrepreneurial enterprise with 180,000 employees. Her previous experience also includes serving as the Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of Bank One Corporation and as the Senior Vice President of Keycorp.
MITCHELL TO DIRECT COOPERATIVE STEM EFFORT WITH BATTELLEBattelle and Ohio State are strengthening their commitment to STEM - science, technology and math - education and aligning it with the state’s economic development strategy. The two research powerhouses recently announced the appointment of Brad Mitchell to serve in a newly created position, director of Battelle-Ohio State STEM Education and Economic Development Engagement. Mitchell currently serves as CEO of the Educational Council, which is governed by school superintendents of the sixteen districts within Franklin County. Read more >
TODAY: ANNUAL BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH COLLOQUIUMBiological Sciences undergraduates will showcase their work from 4-6 p.m. today (4/25) in the Drake Union during the annual Biological Sciences Undergraduate Research Colloquium. The event, along with the Denman Research Forum, is a great opportunity for OSU students to present their findings in a setting that simulates a scientific society meeting. Faculty and alumni judge the posters and prizes are awarded in four research categories. The event is open to the public. Contact: breitenberger.1@osu.edu or 292-9861 AFRICAN AMERICAN HERITAGE FESTIVAL KICKS OFF APRIL 26Aaron McGruder, creator of the award-winning animated comedy series “The Boondocks,” will take part in the 30th anniversary of the African American Heritage Festival, set for Saturday (4/26)-Saturday (5/3) on the Ohio State campus. A world-renowned cartoonist and political commentator, McGruder will share his insight on the creation of the series during a community forum at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday (4/30) at the Newport Music Hall, 1722 N. High St. The kick-off celebration, featuring carnival activities and a wellness fair, will take place from 2-6 p.m. Saturday (4/26) at the Browning Amphitheater on the South Oval. DENTISTRY OFFERS FREE ORAL CANCER SCREENINGS TODAYMore than 40,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral cancer this year, and early detection is the key to survival. The College of Dentistry will provide free oral cancer screening exams from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. today (4/25) at the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery clinic on the second floor of Postle Hall. There is no fee for the exams and no appointments are necessary. Open to the public, this family-friendly program will showcase the OSU Men’s and Women’s Glee Clubs. WOSU’s Christopher Purdy will provide commentary throughout the program. Reservations are not required and there is no charge to attend the performance or visit WOSU@COSI. There is an admission fee for COSI exhibits and films, in addition to a small parking fee. DOMESTIC VIOLENCE CONFERENCE SLATED FOR MAY 28The Region IV Perinatal Center and High Risk Perinatal Project’s Project SAFE, in conjunction with the Columbus Coalition Against Family Violence, will host Exploring Domestic Violence in Overlooked Populations, from 9:45 a.m.-3:35 p.m. Wednesday (5/28) at the Longaberger Alumni House. Topics include domestic violence among the elderly, deaf community, and transgender community, and will conclude with a presentation facilitated by a survivor of domestic violence. The event is free through the support of the Columbus Coalition Against Family Violence. The concert had originally been scheduled for Monday. A second concert scheduled for Monday (4/28) featuring Caroline Hong, piano and Charles Wetherbee, violin has been postponed until next fall. The lineup includes: 7-8:30 p.m. April 28, "The Presence of Latin American Art in Ohio"; noon-1 p.m. April 30, the Salvador Torres Mariachi Band will perform in the cafeteria; noon May 1, presentation by Theresa Delgadillo, "Latino Culture and Latino Studies in the United States”; and 6-8 p.m. May 1, Roberto Ocasio's Latin Jazz Trio performance in the cafeteria. Individuals throughout Central Ohio are invited to shred their personal documents, CDs, VHS cassettes and more.
