OSU MEDICAL CENTER UNVEILS NEW TV COMMERCIALSThe Medical Center has posted two new TV commercials on its Web site for viewing and will start airing them today (4/28). The commercials help define its role as central Ohio's only academic medical center. More than 50 Medical Center researchers, lab assistants, professors, medical students, clinical faculty, nurses and patient-care staff served as the real-life stars of the ads. OSU President E. Gordon Gee joined in for a cameo appearance. View the commercials online GLENN TO PRESENT SCHOOL OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS’ EXCELLENCE IN PUBLIC SERVICE AWARDFormer Sen. John Glenn will present former director of the U.S. Office of Budget and Management Rob Portman with the 2008 Excellence in Public Service Award at a private reception in Washington, D.C. on Thursday (5/1). The Glenn School’s Excellence in Public Service Award is presented annually to an individual whose career exemplifies the highest standards of service in the public interest. Portman represented the 2nd district of Ohio as a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1993 to 2005 and currently teaches Public Budgeting at Ohio State. Contact: moroney.14@osu.edu or 688-4942 KINNEAR ROAD CLOSED AT RR CROSSING FOR TWO WEEKSThe railroad is rebuilding the crossing on Kinnear Road near the Lennox Center. A road closure is scheduled to begin today (4/28) and is expected to last approximately two weeks. EARTHWORKS DAY AT THE NEWARK CAMPUS MAY 3A symposium on the Newark Earthworks and two World Heritage sites: Stonehenge (England) and the Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon (Mexico), will take place from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturday (5/3) in the Reese Conference Center on the Newark campus. Exhibits and speakers on the origins of these sites are scheduled, as well as a graduate student art exhibit on the impact of World Heritage status. The day culminates with a ceremony led by Aztec dancers at the Great Circle Earthworks at 6:30 p.m. Read more > ANOTHER EPISODE OF “IMIX” AIRS ON BIG TEN NETWORKOhio State will air “iMix” on the Big Ten Network at 4:30 p.m. Thursday (5/1), 4:30 a.m. Monday (5/5), and 10:30 a.m. Wednesday (5/7). This episode will feature the OSU Flight Program and Airport; distance education students that come together in the metaverse of Second Life to connect and share knowledge in a unique out-of-classroom experience; and OSU Professor Doru Stefanescu and his students as they shape our future through a joint MIT/NASA project to provide oxygen for a permanent base on the moon, exploring possibilities of metal casting in our world and beyond. Carnell Professor of Physiology, director of Cardiovascular Research Center at Temple University, will deliver “Ca2+ influx through T and L type Ca2+ Channels induces Different Cardiac Phenotypes” at noon Wednesday (4/30) at 170 DHLRI. The DHLRI Discovery Series is designed to provide an opportunity for clinicians and other health practitioners to evaluate basic and clinical science research results presented by nationally recognized leaders. CONFERENCE FEATURES OUTSTANDING CLARINETISTS, COMPOSERS APRIL 30-MAY 38Celebrated clarinetist Kenneth John Grant, Eastman School of Music faculty and principal clarinetist, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra will perform in concert at 8 p.m. Wednesday (4/30), including music of Brahms, Poulenc, Bach in Weigel Hall Auditorium. This opens a four-day conference that runs through Saturday (5/3), the third Zoe and Jack Johnstone Woodwind Master Series. Special guest for the event is D. Contact: pyne.1@osu.edu REGISTER FOR NATIONAL BIOTECH CONFERENCE BY MAY 12 The Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center is hosting the 20th annual meeting of the National Agricultural Biotechnology Council, to be held Tuesday (6/3)-Thursday (6/5) at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Columbus. The conference, “Reshaping American Agriculture to Meet Its Biofuel and Biopolymer Needs,” addresses the crucial juncture America’s top industry is facing and its call to be a leader in the powering, fueling and manufacturing of the country’s future. Register online DEPARTMENT OF LINGUISTICS HOSTS SYMPOSIUM MAY 2-3The Department of Linguistics is hosting a symposium, Linguistic Variation Across the Lifespan from 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Friday (5/2)-Saturday (5/3) in 155 Jennings Hall. The symposium will focus on questions about the sources of linguistic variability at each life stage and the implications of these sources of variability for language processing, acquisition, perception, and social identity construction. MEN’S SOCCER: BUCKEYES, COLUMBUS CREW TO MEET APRIL 29 The Ohio State men’s soccer team will host the Columbus Crew in the First Merit Bank Connor Senn Memorial Match at 7 p.m. Tuesday (4/29) in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Now in its seventh year, all proceeds from the match benefit the Connor Senn Memorial Scholarship Fund at Ohio State, which has raised more than $100,000 to date. The event will include a silent auction that includes a wide array of Ohio State memorabilia, including autographed items. OSU WOMEN IN PHYSICS ORGANIZATION HOSTS SUMMER CAMP FOR GIRLSThe OSU Women in Physics student organization will be hosting a day camp this summer from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday (6/23)-Friday (6/27) to provide girls in grades 6- 8, with the tools and experience to see the power and fun in physics.
