Office of the CIO security alert about malicious software
Warnings are appearing in the media that the Conficker worm will strike today (4/1). This malicious software exploits a vulnerability in Microsoft Windows, and does not affect other operating systems. Microsoft issued a security update (patch) that addressed this vulnerability in October, 2008.
Most university departments automatically update their Windows software, so it is unlikely that university owned computers will be infected. Since university owned computers are required to have current anti-virus software installed, they contain a second "line of defense" that can usually detect and defeat Conficker before it installs itself on a computer. Contact your departmental computing support staff if you have concerns about university owned equipment.
