University Trustees to meet today, April 3
The Ohio State Board of Trustees and its committees will meet today (4/2) and Friday (4/3) at the Longaberger Alumni House. In addition to committee meetings, trustees today will meet in executive session from 10:30 a.m.-noon. On Friday, the schedule includes a meeting of the Agricultural Affairs Committee from 7:30-8:30 a.m. and a meeting with the executive director of the Ohio Ethics Commission from 8:30-9:30 a.m. The board will reconvene at 9:30 a.m. and move into executive session. GASTROESOPHAGEAL REFLUX DISEASE STUDY. The Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery is enrolling participants in a research study to test an investigational device to prevent gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). You may be eligible if you are 18-75 years of age, you need to take medication daily to control GERD, you have not had any surgery to treat GERD, and you do not have Barrett’s esophagus. High school students, parents on campus April 3 for goBuckeye!
Friday (4/3) is goBuckeye!, the last and biggest recruitment event that the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and First Year Experience hosts for high school students admitted to the Class of 2009. As you encounter these visiting students and their families, please greet them with a warm smile and a helping hand if they appear lost. More than 900 students plus their parents (2,200 total guests) will spend the day on the OSU campus and in the colleges as they decide whether or not to select Ohio State as their final college choice.

FACULTY CLUB SPONSORS CHARITY ART AUCTION. Approximately 100 artworks and university collectibles will be offered at the Faculty Club's fifth annual charity art auction on Friday (4/3). Proceeds support the Faculty Club building endowment. Preview and silent auction begin at 6 p.m.; live auction at 7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Student Health Services offers meningitis info on BuckMD blog
A new "BuckMD" blog, designed to answer students' health questions, contains the latest information on the Ohio State student diagnosed earlier this week with a case of bacterial meningitis (infection around the brain and spinal cord). The student is currently receiving treatment and further tests are being run to determine the type of bacterial meningitis. Read more >

HYPERTENSION STUDY. The Department of Family Medicine at Ohio State is currently enrolling for a research study for people with stage 2 hypertension. Stage 2 hypertension is an advanced form of high blood pressure whereby the systolic blood pressure, or top number, is >160 or a diastolic blood pressure, or the bottom number, has a value of >100. This study is looking at how effective a combination pill of valsartan and aliskiren works versus valsartan alone. Participants will receive study related care, study medication and lab tests at no charge. Participation will last up to 12 weeks and participants may receive up to $700. The Institute for Chinese Studies “Future of the Past”/DEALL Alumni Lecture continues at 4:30 p.m. today (4/2) in 140 Jennings Hall. Nick Kaldis, associate professor of Asian & Asian-American Studies at Binghamton University (SUNY), will deliver "Global era: Intra-Asian Racism in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon." Mershon Center seeks study abroad applicants
The Mershon Center for International Security Studies offers the Ralph D. Mershon Study Abroad Scholarship to support undergraduates who wish to enhance their educational experience by studying in a foreign country. Students are encouraged to take foreign language courses, especially those deemed critical for national security, such as Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Hindi, Persian, and others. Priority will be given to students who are preparing for a career related to international security studies. Scholarships of up to $2,000 each will be awarded. Apply by Friday (4/10). Read more >
WBNS-TV’s Andrea Cambern to speak at ASFW lunch April 9
Andrea Cambern, news anchor at WBNS (Channel 10), is the featured speaker Thursday (4/9) at the Association of Staff and Faculty Women luncheon. The event, “Influencing Through Communication: Creating Dynamic Conversations,” takes place from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Faculty Club Grand Lounge. Cambern will discuss how to effectively express ideas and persuade others. The cost is $15 for members and retirees; $20 for nonmembers. Registration deadline is Friday (4/3). OSU joins the Global Star Party April 4
OSU astronomy is holding a public star party from 8-10 p.m. Saturday (4/4) on the roof of Smith Lab, weather permitting, as part of the International Year of Astronomy's Global Star Party. View the moon and Saturn through telescopes, learn about the constellations, and enjoy the night sky.
