Ohio State trustees approve switch to semesters

Ohio State will soon join the ranks of Ohio's other 12 four-year universities when it switches to a semester-based academic year in Autumn 2012. The university's Board of Trustees voted unanimously on Friday (4/3) to adopt a resolution approving the conversion from an academic quarter system, in place since 1922, to a semester calendar. RESEARCH STUDY. Nephrology physicians are currently conducting a research study of an investigational oral medication to see if it helps to lower blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes and severe kidney disease. To qualify participants must have type 2 diabetes and kidney disease, be on a daily dose of sulfonylurea (SU), meglitinide (Starlix, Prandin), insulin, and/or thiazolidinedione (TZD) or not be on any anti-diabetic medication, and not on dialysis. If you qualify, you will receive background anti-diabetic medication, all study related care, including physical exams, lab services and study medication. Aschenbach named Campus Partners president

The Campus Partners Board of Directors on Thursday (4/2) appointed Doug Aschenbach as president of the organization. He has served as interim president since last August. Aschenbach joined the Campus Partners staff in 2001 as vice president for real estate development and was promoted to executive vice president in 2006. Read more >

A NIGHT TO REMEMBER WITH JERRY LUCAS. The OSU Alumni Club of Franklin County is hosting Jerry Lucas for A Night to Remember on Thursday (4/9). Lucas, of Ohio State basketball fame, is the author of more than 60 books in the field of memory training and learning systems. OARDC Annual Research Conference: Register by April 10

Faculty, research staff and students are invited to attend the 2009 OARDC Annual Research Conference to be held at The Blackwell on Thursday (4/23). Web-based registration deadline is Friday (4/10). The theme of the conference is “Recasting Our Agbioscience Research Agenda,” with invited presentations by Carol Whitacre, vice president for Research, and Simon Tripp, director, Research and Planning, Battelle Technology Partnership Practices. Fingerhut to deliver annual Patterson Lecture April 24

Ohio Board of Regents Chancellor Eric Fingerhut will deliver the James F. Patterson Land-Grant University Lecture on Friday (4/24) from 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at the Nationwide and Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center. Fingerhut will address Ohio State’s leadership role as the state’s land-grant university in the University System of Ohio. In addition, the 2009 outreach and engagement grant recipients will be announced and outstanding outreach and engagement programs will be recognized. Register by Friday (4/17). Register online

Buckeye Mail sign-ups begin this week

A new official e-mail system for Ohio State students is rolling out over seven weeks this spring. Buckeye Mail provides extensive storage space, remote access, and ability to work collaboratively, and it retains the Ohio State identity. Sign-ups are being rolled out alphabetically by last name, and begin today (4/6). Students will receive an e-mail from Buckeye Mail with a link when it’s their turn to activate their account. Kenyon College biology professor leads April 7 Science Café

OSU Marion's April Science Café welcomes Richard Hoppe, Department of Biology, Kenyon College, for a discussion of genetic algorithms and an application that his company uses in modeling systems of financial markets. College of Veterinary Medicine Annual Research Day April 9

Advances in Veterinary Medicine Day, also known as Research Day, is designed to showcase the research and scholarship accomplishments of veterinary students, residents, graduate students and faculty in the college. More than 100 research posters will be available for public viewing from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. in the Veterinary Medicine Academic Building and in Sisson Hall. Keynote speaker is Sam Jones, associate professor of Equine Medicine at the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Weisenberger to address Parents Holding Doctorates meeting

Parents Holding Doctorates, a group of stay-at-home parents who have terminal degrees, will meet at 10 a.m. Wednesday (4/8) at the Museum of Biological Diversity. Student Media Showcase: Video & Animation Screening and Talk Back

The Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design and the Department of Theatre will present an evening of recent undergraduate and graduate student work in film and animation at the OSU Urban Arts Space from 5:30-7 p.m. Thursday (4/9). UFSAP to offer stress workshop April 8

The University Faculty and Staff Assistance Program will offer its popular workshop, “Stress Management,” from 5-6:15 p.m. Wednesday (4/8) at OSU Managed Health Care Systems, 700 Ackerman Road, Suite 580. Open to OSU employees, the free workshop will cover ways to identify and measure stress and techniques and tools to help manage it. Registration is required and space is limited.
