Spotlight on ... College of Public Health

Health is not a solo act. It reflects how we live, eat, drink, work and play. Public health makes the world a healthier and safer place. Ohio State’s College of Public Health is the first and only accredited school of public health in the state. Specializations include biostatistics, epidemiology, health behavior and health promotion, environmental health sciences, health services management and policy, veterinary public health, and clinical investigation. The college houses the Center for Health Outcomes Policy and Evaluation Studies and Public Health Preparedness for Infectious Diseases, an interdisciplinary research collaboration of six Ohio State colleges. The Office of Workforce Development serves hundreds of public health professionals annually through trainings and workshops. The college’s Master of Health Administration program is ranked 12th by US News & World Report. Read more >

HYPERTENSION STUDY. The Department of Family Medicine at Ohio State is currently enrolling for a research study for people with stage 2 hypertension. Stage 2 hypertension is an advanced form of high blood pressure whereby the systolic blood pressure, or top number, is >160 or a diastolic blood pressure, or the bottom number, has a value of >100. This study is looking at how effective a combination pill of valsartan and aliskiren works versus valsartan alone. Participants will receive study related care, study medication and lab tests at no charge. Participation will last up to 12 weeks and participants may receive up to $700. Planned system downtime weekend of April 11-12

The Student Systems (including self-service functions) will be unavailable from 5 p.m. Friday (4/10) to 6:30 a.m. Monday (4/13) due to a major Student Information System Student Records Conversion effort. The following systems will be unavailable during this downtime: the Legacy systems (Registrar - MARX, Admissions, Bursar - BARS and Financial Aid - SAM) and the SIS Admissions and Financial Aid Self-Service pages. CHILD ADHD STUDY: Does your child take a long-acting stimulant for ADHD, but still have trouble with symptoms? And would you consider adding a non-stimulant ADHD medication to their current ADHD treatment? If your answer is YES, your child may be eligible to participate in a study to test the safety and efficacy of an investigational, non-stimulant ADHD medication. OSU wins grant for undergraduate research in sciences

The Undergraduate Research Office and faculty in Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Biomedical Science received funds recently to start a Beckman Scholars Program at OSU. Eight Beckman Scholars will receive $16,000 each while conducting independent research with top-notch faculty mentors. Applications are due Monday (4/27). Read more >

Employee Emergency Fund accepting contributions

A new Campus Campaign fund, OSU Employee Emergency Fund (312955), has been established to assist when catastrophic situations arise that cause emergency financial hardships for faculty and staff. The program is expected to begin taking applications in 2010, but without contributions, it will not be successful. To contribute, visit the Campus Campaign site and search for OSU Employee Emergency Fund or type in 312955.

Student Media Showcase: Video & Animation Screening and Talk Back

The Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design and the Department of Theatre will present an evening of recent undergraduate and graduate student work in film and animation at the OSU Urban Arts Space from 5:30-7 p.m. Thursday (4/9). OSU Libraries ReadAloud resumes weekly programming April 9

The OSU Libraries ReadAloud resumes its weekly programming from 3-4 p.m. Thursday (4/9) in the Wexner Center Cafe. The program features Rick Brown, editor of Naked Sunfish, and fellow contributors to the popular e magazine including avant-garde poet John Bennett, and author/poet Elisa Phillips, who will share spontaneous and sporadic highlights from their own work. Richard Samuel West to speak at Aldus Society meeting April 9

Richard Samuel West, independent scholar, historian and expert in the history of 19th century American editorial cartoons will deliver "The Light That Failed: Paging Through a Forgotten 19th Century Magazine" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday (4/9) at the Thurber House, 91 Jefferson Ave. The free event is presented by the OSU Cartoon Library & Museum and the Aldus Society, a Central Ohio group devoted to books and the printed arts. Watson Lubic to deliver 2009 Fritz Lecture April 29

Ruth Watson Lubic, founder and chair emerita of the Family Health and Birth Center and founder and president emerita of the Developing Families Center of Washington, D.C., will deliver the 2009 Edna L. Fritz Lecture at 4 p.m. Wednesday (4/29) in 172 Newton Hall. She will deliver “Reducing Maternal/Infant Outcome Disparities in a Vulnerable Population.” Seating is limited. Moritz College of Law looking for active dispute resolution practitioners

The Program on Dispute Resolution at the Moritz College of Law seeks to compile a list of individuals in the OSU community who work actively in the dispute resolution field. The program is seeking contact information from those whose job responsibilities and/or activities outside of work involve mediation, arbitration, substantial negotiation, and/or other dispute resolution processes. Moritz’s ADR faculty and staff have information regarding local, national and international ADR opportunities and would like to share it with interested members of the OSU community. Domestic violence conference slated for May 27

The Region IV Perinatal Center and High Risk Perinatal Project’s Project SAFE, in conjunction with the Columbus Coalition Against Family Violence, will host "Teen Violence: A Closer Look," from 9:45 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Wednesday (5/27) at the Longaberger Alumni House. Topics include teen violence in relation to dating, gangs and cyberspace. The event is free through the support of the Columbus Coalition Against Family Violence. Register by Monday (5/11). OSU Marion exhibit: Something About Nothing opening reception April 13

The exhibit Something About Nothing, is currently on display through Tuesday (5/5) at the Wayne and Geraldine Kuhn Fine Arts Gallery at Ohio State Marion. The public is invited to the opening reception from 4-6 p.m. Monday (4/13). The American Language Program seeks conversation partners

The American Language Program (English as a Second Language) is recruiting conversation partners for international students to offer students studying English the chance to converse in a relaxed and non-academic atmosphere with a native English speaker. Each conversation partner commits to spending at least one hour per week for one quarter with an international partner. Students, faculty and staff are welcome to apply.
