Ohio State researchers score Sloan Fellowships
An Ohio State mathematician and astronomer are among researchers recently honored with prestigious fellowships from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Chiu-Yen Kao, assistant professor of mathematics, and Todd Thompson, assistant professor of astronomy, were among the outstanding early career scientists, mathematicians and economists chosen by the foundation to receive two-year, $50,000 grants.

Planned system downtime weekend of April 11-12
The Student Systems (including self-service functions) will be unavailable from 5 p.m. Friday (4/10) to 6:30 a.m. Monday (4/13) due to a major Student Information System Student Records Conversion effort. The following systems will be unavailable during this downtime: the Legacy systems (Registrar - MARX, Admissions, Bursar - BARS and Financial Aid - SAM) and the SIS Admissions and Financial Aid Self-Service pages. April 13: Horse Racing, at the Crossroads and in the Crosshairs
Mary Scollay, medical director for the Kentucky Equine Racing Commission, will present "Horse Racing, at the Crossroads and in the Crosshairs," at noon Monday (4/13) in the Veterinary Hospital Auditorium. The talk, an historical look at the public's relationship with horseracing and an attempt to provide perspective on current issues facing the industry, is free and open to the public. Health care reform headlines April 14 Midland Lecture
Lawrence D. Brown, professor of health policy and management at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, will deliver the Midland Lecture, "Perhaps We Can: Prospects for Health Care Reform in the Age of Obama" from 1:45-3 p.m. Tuesday (4/14) in 1183 Postle Hall. Goldberg Teaching Colloquium: Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act
The next Goldberg Teaching Colloquium will focus on the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, at 11:30 a.m. Friday (4/17) in 168 Dulles Hall. Jan Neiger, associate general counsel from the Office of Legal Affairs, will lead a discussion, “Are you violating FERPA (without knowing it)?” RSVP to David Staley by noon Thursday (4/16).
College of Optometry Open House April 18
The College of Optometry is hosting its annual Open House from 1-4:30 p.m. Saturday (4/18) at 338 W. 10th Ave. Optometry students, faculty, staff and alumni will be on hand and tours of the facility are scheduled. TELR's fourth annual Five Minutes of Fame features 10 short presentations by Ohio State faculty, staff and students on topics including animation/machinima, the GigaPan camera, and more. April 13: Lisak to discuss connection between alcohol and sexual assault
David Lisak, the researcher who brought you the Undetected Rapist, is visiting OSU on Monday (4/13) to discuss the connection between alcohol and sexual assault. To be held from 6-7 p.m., this event is open to OSU faculty, staff and students and aims to raise awareness as part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Space is limited. RSVP to trombitas.4@osu.edu. IRB forms help session April 15
Investigators, graduate students and research staff are encouraged to attend a help session on IRB applications from 3-4 p.m. Wednesday (4/15) in 113 Research Foundation. Office of Responsible Research Practices staff will provide an overview of the Initial Review of Human Subjects Research application and will answer questions regarding other IRB forms. Johnson to present lecture on 'Spirit Possession'
Paul Christopher Johnson, University of Michigan, will present "Religion and the Purification of Spirits" at 4:30 p.m. Thursday (4/16) in 090 Science and Engineering Library. Register by May 1 for Linguistic Institute for Language Teachers
The OSU Linguistics Department is offering a workshop Monday (7/6)-Friday (7/10), designed specifically for elementary and high school teachers of foreign languages. The goal is to provide language teachers with greater linguistic awareness and understanding, with the ability to think critically about language, and with a deeper appreciation for all aspects of language and language study.
