National Conference on Diversity, Race & Learning set for May 5
Vice Provost Mac Stewart and the Conference Planning Committee invite you to the Fawcett Conference Center on Tuesday (5/5) for the 15th Annual National Conference on Diversity, Race & Learning. Early registration deadline is Friday (4/17). Co-hosted by the Office of Minority Affairs, Huntington National Bank, and the Office of Continuing Education, this day-long diversity enrichment/in-service/staff development will discuss the theme, “Beyond the Diversity Rhetoric: Academic, Corporate & Community Responsibility.” Register online or call 292-0964. World Cafes on Diversity at Ohio State
Mac Stewart, vice provost for Diversity, and Douglas Crews, chair of the University Senate Diversity Committee, invite you to participate in discussions that will help inform the university's approach to issues of diversity and inclusion. A series of World Café discussions will enhance the understanding of how the university can more effectively address diversity issues. The cafes will be held on various dates. The Global Economy: the G20, the Stimulus Bill & Ohio April 15
The Global Economy: the G20, the Stimulus Bill & Ohio will be held at 8 a.m. Wednesday (4/15) at the Athletic Club of Columbus, 136 E. Broad St. Stephen Buser, professor emeritus of Finance at the Fisher College of Business and a member of the Obama-Biden Presidential Transition Team, will explore what lies ahead for the global economy and Ohio businesses. He was co-founder of the Student Investment Management Program and is the current Historian for the American Finance Association. Register online
Event space reservations being accepted for new Ohio Union
The new Ohio Union is scheduled to open in spring of 2010. The facility will offer more than 30 unique meeting and event spaces such as: a room that celebrates the university's land grant mission and features the story of Maudine the Cow; the region's second-largest event space; a three-story performance hall with a built-in stage and access to an outdoor courtyard; and a Senate Chamber room modeled after the Ohio Statehouse. Race, Drugs, and the New Jim Crow April 21
As part of its 2008-09 Lecture Series, the Department of African American and African Studies Community Extension Center will present “Race, Drugs, and the New Jim Crow” by Michelle Alexander, OSU associate professor of law, at 6 p.m. Tuesday (4/21) at the Extension Center, 905 Mt. Vernon Ave. Alexander will discuss how the War on Drugs has targeted black men for incarceration and then relegated them to a permanent, second-class status. Free Exploring Learning Technologies Unconference May 1
The Exploring Learning Technologies Community at Ohio State will host the inaugural Exploring Learning Technologies Unconference for 50 OSU students, staff and faculty, from noon-4:30 p.m. Friday (5/1) in 311 Central Classroom building. An unconference has the structure of a conference but the content of the sessions is participant-generated at the beginning of the conference. Register online. Germanic Languages & Literatures: Spring 2009 Film Series
The first film in the series is Rosenstrasse (2003), to be screened at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday (4/14) in 180 Hagerty. Acclaimed German actress Katja Riemann gives a superb performance in Margarethe von Trotta’s film, set in 1943 Berlin, as a woman who fights to save her Jewish husband's life while caring for a young girl whose mother is also detained. Animal Sciences hosts All-East Livestock Selection and Evaluation Contest
The Department of Animal Sciences is hosting the All-East Livestock Selection and Evaluation Contest Thursday (4/16)-Saturday (4/18), with the award ceremony on Sunday (4/19). The event is the most comprehensive livestock selection and evaluation contest in the United States. For three days, students from eight universities will be tested in their ability to assess carcass merit and value of market cattle, sheep and hogs, estimate muscle mass, fat thickness and USDA Yield and Quality grades. Nominations are currently being accepted for the 2009 Outstanding Advisor Awards, sponsored annually by the Academic Advising Association of Ohio State and Academic Affairs.
