World-renowned soil scientist to keynote Green Fair April 22

Rattan Lal, a world-renowned soil scientist and the director of Ohio State’s Carbon Management and Sequestration Center, will keynote the opening ceremonies of the university’s Wooster Campus Scarlet, Gray and Green Fair on Tuesday (4/22) — Earth Day. Lal will present “Sustainable Management of Soil and Natural Resources” during the 11 a.m. kickoff in Fisher Auditorium at OARDC. Admission is free. HYPERTENSION STUDY. The Department of Family Medicine at The Ohio State University is currently enrolling for a research study for people with stage 2 hypertension. This study is looking at how effective a combination pill of valsartan and aliskiren works versus valsartan alone. Participation will last up to 12 weeks and participants may receive up to $700. Ohio State hosts Science Olympiad state tournament April 18

Middle and high school teams from across the state will compete against each other and the clock in the 25th annual Science Olympiad to be held Saturday (4/18) on the Ohio State campus. The program is credited with sending many of the top math and science students in the country to the national tournament where Ohio’s teams consistently place in the top 10 award winners and Ohio ranks in the top six of the 48 states currently involved in the program. BIKE TO WORK WEEK is a city-wide event that provides an opportunity to experience cycling for fun and transportation. Enjoy a number of fun and educational events, including safety training, cycling and the law, cultural events, fun rides, and happy hours. OSU is a leading participator in the Commuter Challenge. Today: Briggs to Deliver Bownocker Lectures in School of Earth Sciences

Derek Briggs will present the 67th Annual Bownocker Lectures at 4 and 8 p.m. today (4/16) in 100 Mendenhall Lab. Briggs is the Frederick William Beinecke Professor of Geology and Geophysics and director of the Peabody Museum of Natural History at Yale University. Lecture times and titles are: 4 p.m., “Burgess Shale-Type Fossils after the Cambrian?” and 8 p.m., “Extraordinary Fossils: Windows on the Evolution of Marine Life.” Co-sponsored by Darwin: Growth of an Idea Lecture Series. Lecture on 'Spirit Possession' today in SEL

Paul Christopher Johnson, University of Michigan, will present '"Religion' and the Purification of Spirits" at 4:30 p.m. today (4/16) in 090 Science and Engineering Library. The lecture will investigate how the category of "spirit possession" has served as a key rubric for the comparative study of religion. The event is free and all are welcome to attend. DEALL Undergraduate Research Forum April 17

The public is invited to the fourth annual DEALL Undergraduate Research Forum from 2:30-6:30 p.m. Friday (4/17) in 10 Page Hall. The event features presentations on research undertaken by advanced-standing majors in the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures. The Central Ohio Flute Association will host its 26th annual COFA Festival starting at 8 a.m. Saturday (4/18) in Weigel and Hughes halls. The festival is co-sponsored by the OSU School of Music in conjunction with the OSU Contemporary Music Festival. Guest artists are flutist Jill Felber and composer Jennifer Higdon. The Last Jews of Libya film and discussion April 19

Ohio State's Melton Center for Jewish Studies invites the community to a screening and discussion of the documentary film, The Last Jews of Libya, at 7 p.m. Sunday (4/19) in 168 Dulles Hall. A discussion will be led by the film's director, Vivienne Roumani-Denn, and Jane Hathaway, OSU professor of history and an expert on Jewish communities under Islamic rule. Sassen to discuss new book on Territory, Authority, and Rights

Saskia Sassen, Robert S. Lynd Professor of Sociology at Columbia University, will deliver "Neither Global nor National: Novel Assemblages of Territory, Authority and Rights" at noon Tuesday (4/21) at the Mershon Center for International Security Studies. Sassen's book, Territory, Authority, Rights: From Medieval to Global Assemblages (Princeton University Press, 2008), won the Robert Jervis and Paul Schroeder Award from the American Political Science Association. New program for students in recovery

Support is available for students in recovery from addiction to alcohol and other drugs in a new program of the Student Wellness Center in partnership with Counseling and Consultation Service and University Housing. The program supports students in recovery through specialized housing, 12-step meetings, educational workshops addressing overall wellness, and leadership and community service opportunities. Kaffeestunde: German Coffee and Conversation Hour every Friday

The Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures invites the university community to the weekly Kaffeestunde (German Coffee and Conversation Hour). Anyone interested in practicing or improving their German language skills is welcome. German speakers from outside the university also welcome.
