$1 million grant furthering efforts to eliminate food crisis in Africa

Ohio State is partnering with Virginia Tech to strengthen food security in Africa with a three-year, $1 million initiative to improve productivity, availability and marketing of key staple commodities and cash crops. OSU's Office of International Programs in Agriculture is sharing a U.S. Agency for International Development African Food Security Initiative grant to study methods to increase yields, reduce crop risks and boost economic development in Uganda, an East African nation. HYPERTENSION STUDY. The Department of Family Medicine at The Ohio State University is currently enrolling for a research study for people with stage 2 hypertension. This study is looking at how effective a combination pill of valsartan and aliskiren works versus valsartan alone. Participation will last up to 12 weeks and participants may receive up to $700. Diversity Lecture & Cultural Arts Series: Evening of Poetry with Lucille Clifton

Lucille Clifton, Distinguished Professor of Humanities at St. Mary's College in Maryland and 2007 recipient of the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize, one of the top awards given to American poets, is the next President and Provost's Diversity Lecture and Cultural Arts Series guest at 7 p.m. Tuesday (4/21) in the Wexner Center's Film & Video Theater. The Banvard Gallery in the Knowlton School of Architecture will host a gallery talk and reception today (4/17) with the creators of the current show, Toy Talk: Unplugged Architecture by Jr-Gang Chi and Lisa Hsieh. University Libraries project places Lantern archive online

An online searchable archive of past issues of the Lantern is now available, thanks to a project undertaken by University Libraries. The OSU student newspaper, published continuously since 1881, has been digitized. The just-launched archive includes all copies of the Lantern published from 1881-1892, 1959-1972 and 1976-1979. Additional issues will be added on an ongoing basis, with the completed project including all the issues published from 1881-1997. Read more >

Photographs sought for OSU Global Health Photo Exhibit

The Global Health Initiative at Ohio State is seeking photograph submissions from OSU faculty, staff or students for the third annual Global Health Photo Exhibit on Wednesday (5/6) in the Hagerty Hall lobby. Deadline for submissions is Friday (4/24). Selected photographs will be printed and exhibited; first, second, and third place gift certificates to be awarded. 2009 Midwest Slavic Conference April 16-18

Ohio State’s Center for Slavic and East European Studies and the Midwest Slavic Association are hosting the 2009 Midwest Slavic Conference Thursday (4/16)-Saturday (4/18) at the Blackwell Inn. The conference includes discussions on art, culture, dance, film studies, history, identity, language learning, linguistics, literature, politics, and religion. Keynote speaker Dina Iordanova, University of St. Andrews, Scotland will deliver “History for Losers: Cultural Historiography and Popular Culture in the ‘New’ Europe.” Read more >

College of Optometry Open House April 18

The College of Optometry is hosting its annual Open House from 1-4:30 p.m. Saturday (4/18) at 338 W. 10th Ave. Optometry students, faculty, staff and alumni will be on hand and tours of the facility are scheduled. April 20: Man-houng Lin to discuss Taipei Treaty between Taiwan and Japan

The Institute for Chinese Studies “Future of the Past” Lecture continues at 4 p.m. Monday (4/20) in 120 Mershon Center. Man-houng Lin, director at the National Archives in Taipei, Taiwan will deliver “Taiwan and the Epistemological Neglect of the Asia-Pacific World,” a discussion about Taiwan’s sovereignty and the nation’s confusion about its own legal status as a result of the ignorant world-view of the Asia-Pacific region. April 21: Andrew Stewart to deliver History of Art Ludden Lecture

Andrew Stewart, Nicolas C. Petris Professor of Greek Studies and Professor of Ancient Mediterranean Art and Archaeology at the University of California at Berkeley, will deliver the Eleventh Franklin M. Ludden Lecture in the History and Criticism of Art at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday (4/21) in the Wexner Film/Video Theater. The talk, "Individuality and Innovation in Greek Sculpture," will be followed by a reception in the Hayes Hall Lobby. Contact: 292-7481

Metro High School to honor President Gee April 22

Metro Early College High School’s second annual Festival of Friends fundraiser will take place from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday (4/22) at the Longaberger Alumni House. OSU President E.
