Afro-jazz guitarist Lionel Loueke visits the Wex Friday (4/24) for a cabaret-style evening with his trio. Blessed with roots in music from his homeland of Benin, he’s equally well schooled in sophisticated jazz, and you'll hear a mix of strong jazz phrasing with rippling African overtones. Jazz greats and Loueke fans Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter contributed to Loueke’s Blue Note label debut, Karibu. Planet magazine calls his sound “fresh and energetic.” Read more >

Ohio State faculty among American Academy of Arts & Sciences
newly elected members

The American Academy of Arts & Sciences today (4/20) announced the election of leaders in the sciences, the humanities and the arts, business, public affairs, and the nonprofit sector. The 210 new Fellows and 19 Foreign Honorary Members join one of the nation’s most prestigious honorary societies and a center for independent policy research. Among those elected this year are two OSU faculty: Ann Hamilton, professor of art, and Tina Henkin, professor of microbiology. Read more >

RESEARCH STUDY. Nephrology physicians are currently conducting a research study of an investigational oral medication to see if it helps to lower blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes and severe kidney disease. To qualify participants must have type 2 diabetes and kidney disease, be on a daily dose of sulfonylurea (SU), meglitinide (Starlix, Prandin), insulin, and/or thiazolidinedione (TZD) or not be on any anti-diabetic medication, and not on dialysis. If you qualify, you will receive background anti-diabetic medication, all study related care, including physical exams, lab services and study medication. April 22: Celebrate Earth Day at Scarlet, Gray and Green Fair

Celebrate Earth Day the “Green” way at the second annual OSU Wooster Campus Scarlet, Gray and Green Fair. The fair will feature more than 75 exhibits on a variety of topics including plug-in hybrid cars, alternative energy, resource and energy conservation, bio-fuels, and wildlife along with demonstrations, student activities, food and more from 11:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Wednesday (4/22) at OARDC on the Wooster Campus. HYPERTENSION STUDY. The Department of Family Medicine at The Ohio State University is currently enrolling for a research study for people with stage 2 hypertension. This study is looking at how effective a combination pill of valsartan and aliskiren works versus valsartan alone. Participation will last up to 12 weeks and participants may receive up to $700. Student Center online resource for students now available at Buckeye Link

Part of the new Student Information System, the Student Center provides integrated access to self-service, such as registering for classes, viewing schedules and enrollment dates, and accessing advisor information. Students can also view account and financial aid information, select or waive Student Health Insurance, and view a list of “to-do’s” when additional documents are needed. Sixth Annual CFAES Undergraduate Research Forum April 21

The Sixth Annual CFAES Undergraduate Research Forum will take place from 1-4 p.m. Tuesday (4/21) in the Agricultural Administration Auditorium. View 35 poster presentations and interact with undergraduate researchers from the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences and School of Environment and Natural Resources. The OSU Center for International Business Education and Research is presenting the Distinguished International Speaker Series, featuring Heleanna Georgalis, president of Moplaco Trading Co., from 12:30-1:20 p.m. today (4/20) in 355 Gerlach Hall. Georgalis will discuss her strategy for bringing Abyssinian Mocca to the U.S. market, the impact of Ethiopia's new commodity exchange on the coffee industry, and the challenges associated with running a large company in an emerging market. Today: Art Opening Reception at the Upper Arlington Concourse Gallery

Sky Sculptures: Traditional Kites of Asia is currently on exhibit at the Concourse Gallery, 3600 Tremont Road, through Wednesday (5/13), in conjunction with Asian History month in May. An opening reception will take place from 5-7 p.m. today (4/20). The reception will include traditional Asian music and dance performances, and authentic Asian fare. This event is co-sponsored by Franklin County Commissioners and the OSU Institute for Chinese Studies.

CFS: A talk on Ohio’s Chemical Valley April 21

Mary Hufford of University of Pennsylvania will deliver "Just Floating in the Air: The Dance of Rumor and Science in Ohio's Chemical Valley” at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday (4/21) in the Mershon Center. The lecture is part of the Center for Folklore Studies lecture series. A conversation with Hufford about community collaborations in fieldwork will follow. Pizza will be served. April 21: Coping with Distressed Students free workshop

“Coping with Distressed Students,” are free workshops offered by Counseling and Consultation Service, to help faculty, staff and TAs deal with distressed or disruptive students. Part I introduces basic issues and resources and is offered from noon-1 p.m. Tuesday (4/21). Part II, a new workshop which offers advanced skill building and problem solving, will be held from 4-5 p.m. Monday (4/27). Both are at 300 Younkin Success Center. Academy of Teaching hosts annual mini-conference on teaching

The third annual conference on “Great Teaching” set for Friday (4/24) in the Younkin Success Center will feature presentations by President Gordon Gee, Chancellor Eric Fingerhut, and a variety of concurrent sessions on all aspects of teaching, from digital storytelling to “calendar conversion.” Teaching in online environments and student retention will also be explored. Face Time with OSU Dancers: Melanie Bales and Susan Hadley

The OSU community is invited to the OSU Urban Arts Space from noon-1 p.m. Wednesday (4/22) for a behind the scenes look at dance making and performance in preparation for OSU’s Dance Downtown. Joining the Digital Image World April 23

Visit the OSU Urban Arts Space from 6-8 p.m. Thursday (4/23) for a free demonstrational workshop presented by the Ohio Art League. The workshop will focus on creating digital images of artwork to use for submissions to exhibitions. Topics covered in the workshop will include: transferring slide images to digital images, selecting a digital camera, transferring digital images from camera to computer, editing digital images, and formatting images for submissions, print, and web. April 22-23: John Lennon Educational Tour Bus demos media production tools at OSU

The John Lennon Educational Tour Bus will be parked next to the Wexner Center on Wednesday (4/22) and Thursday (4/23) to demonstrate state-of-the-art music and multimedia production. On Wednesday, Lennon staff will coach a group of local students as they write an original song, record it, and produce a music video. On Thursday, enjoy tours of the bus from 1-3 p.m. At 4:30 p.m., the video premieres in the Wexner Center's Performance Space as part of a program about engaging students with technology. Read more >

The OSU Motorsports Teams invite faculty, staff and students to an open house from 2-5 p.m. Saturday (4/25) at the Center for Automotive Research. Learn what the teams are about, what current projects are being undertaken, and pose questions to team members and advisors. Teams will also be hosting a Ride and Drive event. OSU’s Digital Storytelling Program seeks videos for a Wexner Center screening in honor of the International Day for Sharing Life Stories on Friday (5/15). Apply online and submit your video (6 minutes or less) to Liv Gjestvang at the Digital Union (370 SEL) by 5 p.m. Thursday (4/23).
