The plot of the exquisite new film In the City of Sylvia from Spanish director José Luis Guerín is a simple one: a romantic young man wanders through Strasbourg in search of a woman named Sylvia he met there years before, looking for her in the city's streets, cafés, and nightclubs. Chadwick Arboretum to host Arbor Day Celebration April 24

A tree will be planted to honor veterans of the nation's armed forces this Arbor Day during a dedication ceremony at 10 a.m. Friday (4/24) at the Colour Columbus Native Tree Collection, north of the Nationwide and Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center, 2201 Fred Taylor Drive. Chadwick Arboretum and Learning Gardens is sponsoring the event. Columbus Dispatch columnist Mike Harden is the featured speaker. The event is free and open to the public. A reception will follow. HYPERTENSION STUDY. The Department of Family Medicine at The Ohio State University is currently enrolling for a research study for people with stage 2 hypertension. This study is looking at how effective a combination pill of valsartan and aliskiren works versus valsartan alone. Participation will last up to 12 weeks and participants may receive up to $700. Apply now for 2010-2011 Fulbright Scholar Program

Ohio State faculty and professionals are encouraged to apply to the Fulbright Scholar Program if they are interested in lecturing or conducting research abroad, or participating in international seminars. The Council for the International Exchange of Scholars is accepting applications now for grants that will be available to use in 2010-2011. Funded by the U.S. Department of State, there are opportunities available in nearly 130 countries. BIKE TO WORK WEEK is a city-wide event that provides an opportunity to experience cycling for fun and transportation. Enjoy a number of fun and educational events, including safety training, cycling and the law, cultural events, fun rides, and happy hours. OSU is a leading participator in the Commuter Challenge. Today: Diversity Lecture & Cultural Arts Series event with Lucille Clifton

Lucille Clifton, Distinguished Professor of Humanities at St. Mary's College in Maryland and 2007 recipient of the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize, one of the top awards given to American poets, is the next President and Provost's Diversity Lecture and Cultural Arts Series guest at 7 p.m. today (4/21) in the Wexner Center's Film & Video Theater. May 4: Larson to present rescheduled Darwin: Growth of an Idea lecture

Edward Larson, the Hugh and Hazel Darling Chair in Law at Pepperdine University will present "Darwin and the Victorian Soul: Late 19th Century Responses to Darwin's Theory of Evolution" at 7 p.m. Monday (5/4) in Saxbe Auditorium, Drinko Hall. Reception is at 6:30 p.m. Larson is recipient of the 1998 Pulitzer Prize in History for Summer for the Gods: The Scopes Trial and America's Continuing Debate Over Science and Religion. University utility metering database now available online

Facilities Operations and Development has launched a utility metering data management and billing database, as recommended by the university Energy Committee. Ohio State students, faculty and staff may access online information on utility (energy and water) consumption and cost information for our campus. April 22: OSU Mansfield presents Dance Around the World

OSU Mansfield will host Dance Around the World from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Wednesday (4/22) in the Eisenhower Hall café. Three troupes will demonstrate traditional dances: The Richland Academy Dancers (dances from five distinct cultures), Sogbety Diomande & Troupe (traditional African drum and dance) and Anu Joshi’s Indian Dance Troupe (traditional Indian dance). The free program is co-sponsored by the OSU Alumni Club of Richland County, the OSU Mansfield Diversity Committee, and the OSU-M/NCSC Arts & Lectures Series. Contact: (419) 755-4215

Latin American Film Series: A Day Without A Mexican

The second film in the Spring 2009 Latin American Film Series, A Day Without A Mexican, will be shown at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday (4/22) in Hagerty Hall. Sergio Arau’s 2004 mockumentary examines the disastrous repercussions that would occur if California-based Mexicans, one-third of the state’s population, were to suddenly disappear. Center for Retrovirus Distinguished Research Career Award, Seminar April 23

The annual Center for Retrovirus Distinguished Research Career Award and Keynote Seminar will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday (4/23) in the Dunlap Auditorium, Veterinary Medicine Academic Building. Irvin S. Y. Chen, director of the UCLA AIDS Institute and professor at UCLA School of Medicine will deliver "Turning the Tables: Stem Cell Modification using HIV to Fight HIV." The 2009 awardee is internationally renown for his ability to transform fundamental discoveries in basic biology of cancer and AIDS into therapeutic application at the bedside. Artists and Scholars in Public Life: Publicly Active Graduate Education

Rick Livingston, associate director of the Institute for Collaborative Research and Public Humanities will hold an informational session about civic engagement, public scholarship and the PAGE network sponsored by the Imagining America Consortium, at 4:30 p.m. Thursday (4/23) in 351 Hagerty Hall. Fellowships for graduate students to attend the 10th annual Imagining America conference in New Orleans in October are available. April 23: Personal Journey into Korean Fictional World

Koo Jamyung, a notable Korean novelist, will present “Personal Journey into Korean Fictional World,” from 3:30-5 p.m. Thursday (4/23) in 115 Mendenhall Lab. Jamyung will discuss globalization’s effect on Korea and Korean literature, and explore contemporary Korean writings, including her own. Jamyung also will host a minifiction writing workshop for students interested in Korean language and literature from 4-5:30 p.m. today (4/21) in 388 Hagerty Hall. Read more >

Center for Cognitive Science 2009 CogFest May 1

The Center for Cognitive Science 2009 CogFest will take place from 1-4 p.m. Friday (5/1) in the Smith Seminar Room, Physics Building. There will be three, one-half hour talks by OSU faculty, and a one hour talk by guest speaker Gary Marcus, professor of psychology at New York University. April 24: Buckeye Barbeque Qlub, OSU Food Industries Center host BBQ 101

The Buckeye Barbeque Qlub in conjunction with the OSU Food Industries Center is hosting BBQ 101 from 3-5 p.m. Friday (4/24). Local chefs, entrepreneurs, and expert BBQ professionals will discuss the perfect barbeque, including selecting the perfect cut of meat and the basics of smoke woods, spice rubs, and barbeque sauces.
