Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching

The Thursday (4/23) edition of onCampus features the 18 Ohio State faculty who have been honored this spring as recipients of the 2009 Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching, the Distinguished Scholar Award, and the Faculty Award for Distinguished University Service. They will receive their awards at a ceremony on Friday (4/24). OSUToday will feature one of the three awards in each of the next three issues, starting with the 2009 Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching today.

The Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching honors faculty for superior teaching. Recipients are nominated by present and former students and colleagues and are chosen by a committee of alumni, students and faculty. They receive a cash award of $3,000, and a $1,200 increase in their base salaries from the Office of Academic Affairs. Read more >

FTAD name changed to University Center for the Advancement of Teaching

Since 2000, the Office of Faculty and TA Development has refocused its efforts to better address the university's priorities relating to learning outcomes assessment, course redesign, and technology-enhanced teaching, learning and research. These efforts move toward longer-term professional development for faculty, staff and Graduate Teaching Associates. The Council on Academic Affairs has approved a new name: the University Center for the Advancement of Teaching, to better express the current range of services and mission, vision and objectives of the unit. Directed by Alan Kalish, the center will continue to report to Academic Affairs.

HYPERTENSION STUDY FOR AFRICAN AMERICANS. The Department of Family Medicine at The Ohio State University is currently enrolling for a research study for African Americans with stage 2 hypertension. This study is looking at how effective the combination of aliskiren and amlodipine is compared with amlodipine alone. The study comprises 6-8 visits to our clinic at Rardin Family Practice and participants may receive up to $700. Today: OSU contingent from Byrd Polar to be featured on Weather Channel

Five members of the Byrd Polar Research Center will be featured today (4/23) on The Weather Channel as the network observes Earth Week. Ellen Mosley-Thompson, David Bromwich, Ian Howat, Jason Box and Julie Codispoti will all be featured live as the network airs its "Green Is Universal" coverage from 4-10 p.m. Mike Bettes, an Ohio State alum in atmospheric science, is hosting the program. Chancellor Fingerhut to deliver Patterson Lecture April 24

Ohio Board of Regents Chancellor Eric Fingerhut will deliver the keynote address, “The Land-Grant College and the University System of Ohio: Evolving Roles in Higher Education,” at the 6th Annual James F. Patterson Land-Grant University Lecture at 11 a.m. Friday (4/24) at the Nationwide and Ohio Farm Bureau 4-H Center, 2201 Fred Taylor Drive. President E. Today: Lancaster to discuss ancient Roman building technology

Ohio University professor Lynne Lancaster will present "Olive Oil and Architecture in Roman North Africa" at 8 p.m. today (4/23) in 014 (basement) University Hall. Roman builders developed a method of constructing vaults using small terracotta tubes inserted one into another. These tubes resulted in new forms of vaulting such as those in the famous Byzantine church of San Vitale in Ravenna. Contact: Tim McNiven

Dentistry: Wong to deliver Distinguished Lecture today

The College of Dentistry’s Office of Research will present a Distinguished Lecture featuring David Wong, a leading researcher in oral cancer and saliva diagnostics from 11:15 a.m.-12:30 p.m. today (4/23) in 1187 Postle Hall. Wong, associate dean of research at the UCLA School of Dentistry and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences, will deliver “Salivary Diagnostics.” The lecture is free and open to all OSU medical professionals. The Institute for Chinese Studies “Future of the Past” Lecture continues at 2:30 p.m. Friday (4/24) in 060 Jennings Hall. Kent Guy, professor and chair of history, University of Washington (Seattle), will deliver “The Development of Qing Studies: Retrospect and Prospect-Why Empires Kill,” a lecture about justice and consistency in imperial legal systems. The Buckeye Barbeque Qlub in conjunction with the OSU Food Industries Center is hosting BBQ 101 from 3-5 p.m. Friday (4/24). Reel to Reel Campus Choice voting announcement

Last January, the Office of Student Life and the Inspire USA Foundation launched the first annual “Reel to Reel” film competition to promote positive mental health messaging for young people around the world. Seven students rose to the challenge and are anxiously waiting for you to decide who will win the Campus Choice Award. OSU Summer Residential Program June 22-July 2

High school class of 2009 graduates and current high school sophomores and juniors are encouraged to apply for the OSU Summer Residential Program to be held Monday (6/22)-Thursday (7/2). The theme is "The Lowcountry: Black Culture, Literacy and History in Charleston, South Carolina." Columbus Museum of Art free to students, faculty and staff April 24

The Columbus Museum of art is offering free admission to OSU students, faculty and staff from 7 p.m.-midnight Friday (4/24). Ohio State guests should bring their BuckID cards and may bring an unlimited number of friends and family. Guests can explore the museum’s featured exhibit, To Live Forever: Egyptian Treasures from the Brooklyn Museum. Complimentary roundtrip bus transportation available.
