University Distinguished Scholar Awards

The Thursday (4/23) edition of onCampus features the 18 Ohio State faculty who have been honored this spring as recipients of the 2009 Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching, the University Distinguished Scholar Award, and the Faculty Award for Distinguished University Service. They receive their awards at a ceremony today (4/24). OSUToday is featuring each of the three awards in three consecutive issues, concluding on Monday (4/27).

The University Distinguished Scholar Award, established in 1978, recognizes exceptional scholarly accomplishments by senior professors who have compiled a substantial body of research, as well as the work of younger faculty who have demonstrated great scholarly potential. The award is supported by the Office of Research. Recipients are nominated by their departments and chosen by a committee of senior faculty. Distinguished Scholars receive a $3,000 honorarium and a research grant of $20,000 to be used over the next three years. Read more >

HYPERTENSION STUDY FOR AFRICAN AMERICANS. The Department of Family Medicine at The Ohio State University is currently enrolling for a research study for African Americans with stage 2 hypertension. This study is looking at how effective the combination of aliskiren and amlodipine is compared with amlodipine alone. The study comprises 6-8 visits to our clinic at Rardin Family Practice and participants may receive up to $700. U.S. News: Eleven Ohio State graduate programs in nation’s top ten

According to the U.S. News & World Report 2010 edition of America’s Best Graduate Schools released Thursday (4/23), Ohio State offers some of the top graduate programs in the nation. Among all universities public and private, the magazine rates 11 OSU graduate programs in the top ten nationally: American politics (political science) social psychology (psychology), social stratification (sociology), administration/supervision (education), counseling/personnel services (education), curriculum/instruction (education), elementary education, secondary education, vocational/ technical education, supply chain/logistics (business), and dispute resolution (law). Today: Biological, Mathematical, and Physical Sciences Undergraduate Research Forum

Undergraduate students majoring in or conducting research in Biological, Mathematical, and Physical Sciences will present their research from 3-5 p.m. today (4/24) in the atrium of the Physics Research Building, during the 2009 Undergraduate Research Forum. The event, along with the Denman Research Forum, showcases outstanding research of students, presented in a setting that simulates a scientific society meeting. Faculty judge the posters. The Climate, Water, & Carbon Program reminds researchers that seed grant proposals are due Friday (5/1). This call is open to all OSU faculty and researchers with PI status. Today: Five Minutes of Fame showcase

The OSU community is invited to TELR's Five Minutes of Fame from noon-1:30 p.m. today (4/24) in 150 Younkin Success Center. The event features 10 short presentations by Ohio State faculty, staff and students about innovative eLearning achievements and technologies. Jews of Morocco: Discussion, dinner, visiting scholar April 26

As part two in its “Jews of North Africa” series, the Melton Center for Jewish Studies presents “The Jews of Morocco” from 5-8:30 p.m. Sunday (4/26) at the Columbus Jewish Community Center, 1125 College Ave. Includes a panel discussion with local natives of Morocco, dinner and a multi-media presentation by Oren Kosansky, professor of anthropology at Lewis and Clark College. April 27: Islamic Scholar to discuss Muslim Western Migration

Ralph Ghadban, a German Islamic scholar and member of the Institute for Advanced Studies, will present “Islamic Law of Muslim Minorities in the West” at 3:30 p.m. Monday (4/27) in 306 Hagerty Hall. Ghadban will discuss the traditional Muslim view of the west as forbidden land to settle in, and the unexpected 20th century western migration that has lead to more than 1.2 billion Muslims living in non-Muslim countries. Public lecture on returning veterans highlights Multiple Perspectives Conference

The Multiple Perspectives on Access, Inclusion & Disability conference, Tuesday (4/28)-Wednesday (4/29) at the Pfahl Executive Education and Conference Center, hosted by the ADA Coordinators Office, will feature the Ken Campbell Memorial Lecture on Disability Policy, from 2:30-4:30 p.m. Tuesday (4/28) at the Blackwell Inn. It is free and open to the public. Later that evening, a reception at the OSU Urban Arts Space will include remarks on museum access by renowned disability studies scholar Georgina Kleege, as well as a variety of accessible tours of the 2009 MFA Exhibition: Begged, Borrowed, and Stolen. World Cafes on Diversity at Ohio State

OIT's quarterly computing short courses are noncredit and are offered at no charge to you. Topics include: Excel and PowerPoint 2003, Windows XP/MS Office Overview and Windows XP System Management, FrontPage, Web Design, SPSS, and SAS. Online classes are also available: Office 2007 Overview, includes information on what’s new with Office 2007; Xpedio, two courses covering topics for consumers and contributors on the Xpedio document management system. Dentistry offers free oral cancer exams May 1

Through the College of Dentistry’s annual Oral Cancer Screening Day, free exams will be offered from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday (5/1) at the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic, second floor of Postle Hall. Appointments are not necessary. Anyone with a history of heavy drinking, smoking or smokeless tobacco use has an increased risk of developing oral cancer, but early detection is key to surviving.
