Faculty Award for Distinguished University Service
The Thursday (4/23) edition of onCampus features the 18 Ohio State faculty who have been honored this spring as recipients of the 2009 Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching, the Distinguished Scholar Award, and the Faculty Award for Distinguished University Service. OSUToday is featuring each of the three awards in three consecutive issues, concluding with the Faculty Award for Distinguished University Service today (4/27).
The public is invited to the awards ceremony to be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday (4/28) at the Wexner Center for the Arts Film/Video Theater. A reception will follow. Please note, an incorrect date was previously published.
The Faculty Award for Distinguished University Service honors faculty whose contributions to the development and implementation of university policies and programs through non-administrative roles have been extensive and have made documentable impact on the quality of the university. Recipients are nominated by members of the university community and selected by a committee of faculty, administrators, and previous recipients. They receive both a cash award of $3,000 and an increase of $1,200 to their base salaries from the Office of Academic Affairs. Read more >

HYPERTENSION STUDY FOR AFRICAN AMERICANS. The Department of Family Medicine at The Ohio State University is currently enrolling for a research study for African Americans with stage 2 hypertension. This study is looking at how effective the combination of aliskiren and amlodipine is compared with amlodipine alone. The study comprises 6-8 visits to our clinic at Rardin Family Practice and participants may receive up to $700. OARDC scientist honored for inventions; Moves discoveries closer to the marketplace
John Finer, OSU professor in the Department of Horticulture and Crop Science, on Thursday (4/23) received the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center’s 2009 Director’s Innovator of the Year Award. He was recognized for his many contributions to solving basic and applied problems in molecular biology. He is a leading researcher in the genetic transformation of soybeans and the improvement of legumes. Among other innovations, Finer has invented a robotic image-capturing system that digitally captures data and images in real time. Read more >

BIKE TO WORK WEEK, a city-wide event that provides you an opportunity to experience cycling for fun and transportation. Enjoy a number of fun and educational events: safety training, cycling and the law, cultural events, fun rides, and happy hours. OSU is a leading participator in the Commuter Challenge. Employee Emergency Fund accepting contributions
A new Campus Campaign fund, OSU Employee Emergency Fund (312955), has been established to assist when catastrophic situations arise that cause emergency financial hardships for faculty and staff. The program is expected to begin taking applications in 2010, but without contributions, it will not be successful. To contribute, visit the Campus Campaign site and search for OSU Employee Emergency Fund or type in 312955.
Campus conducting Operation Feed through May 15
The Columbus campus is conducting Operation Feed, the annual community-wide food drive and fundraising event, to help provide nutritious meals for homeless and low-income residents in central Ohio, through Friday (5/15). Operation Feed will help collect critically needed non-perishable food for distribution to hundreds of food pantries, soup kitchens, and emergency shelters in 19 central Ohio counties. Germanic Languages & Literatures: Spring 2009 Film Series
The second film in the series is Dresden – the Inferno (2006), to be screened in two parts (90 minutes each): at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday (4/28) in 180 Hagerty, and Tuesday (5/12). Directed by Roland Suso Richter, this sweeping World War II drama plays out against the backdrop of the bombing of Dresden in February 1945. May 1: Patti Lather to deliver Qualitative Inquiry lecture
Patti Lather, International Scholar in Qualitative Inquiry, College of Education & Human Ecology, will present “Déjà Vu All Over Again: Qualitative Research in the Shifting Federal Scene” at 2 p.m. Friday (5/1) in 4012 Smith Lab. Lather has taught qualitative research, feminist methodology and gender and education at OSU since 1988 and has been internationally recognized for her research. Center for Cognitive Science 2009 CogFest May 1
The Center for Cognitive Science 2009 CogFest will take place from 1-4 p.m. Friday (5/1) in the Smith Seminar Room, Physics Building. There will be three, one-half hour talks by OSU faculty, and a one hour talk by guest speaker Gary Marcus, professor of psychology at New York University. The Center for Operational Excellence in conjunction with the Sander Flaum MBA Leadership and Professional Development Series will co-host a special leadership event on Tuesday (5/5) at the Blackwell Inn. Tammy Bliss, strategic project manager in the office of the CEO at Coca-Cola, will present “Overcoming Challenges for Women Leaders in the Corporate World.” Bliss will share insights on overcoming obstacles and creating a dynamic career on an international stage. OSU Extension offers homeschool families outdoor education day camp
HEROES (Homeschoolers Exploring Recreation, Outdoor Education & Science) Camp at 4-H Camp Ohio is a one-day outdoor education experience specifically for homeschool families on Saturday (5/9). Parents and children participate. Sessions include archery, stream study, Native American Living History, and more.
