Ohio State, Ohio University team up to address gap in early-stage capital
Ohio State and Ohio University on Thursday (4/5) announced that they are partnering to create a new commercialization and funding model. As part of that partnership, they have committed $35 million to the formation of a venture capital fund designed to meet the need for early-stage funding of innovative technology ventures. The universities also will leverage their resources and assets to bring the best talent, funding and facilities to jumpstart entrepreneurial activity and venture creation in Ohio.

Web Based Smoking Cessation for Women. Women cigarette smokers over 18 years are needed for a 6-month study of smoking cessation using the Internet for group support. Participants are provided smoking cessation medication (Chantix) at no cost. Half the participants will be asked to attend 10 online group support sessions. Participants need access to a computer, will be asked to complete questionnaires, and provide saliva samples 3 times receiving $25 each time. President Gee issues statement on Hale Center vandalism
On Thursday (4/5) President Gee issued a statement responding to the vandalism at the Frank W. Hale Jr. Black Cultural Center. "Let me be very clear: This is not who we are at Ohio State. Racism will not be tolerated on our campus. I want to assure you that our University police are vigorously investigating this incident."

Ohio State Marion to announce technology education partnership
Ohio Congressman Jim Jordan, area manufacturers, education partners, and community leaders will announce a joint technology education project between Ohio State Marion, Tri Rivers Career Center, and Marion Technical College on Monday (4/9) at Tri-Rivers Career Center. The three schools, in partnership with companies like RobotWorx, Honda, U.S. Yachiyo, and Fanuc Robotics are combining forces to operate an industrial robotics and advanced manufacturing center to be housed at Tri Rivers Career Center in Marion.

Embi receives AMIA distinguished paper award
Peter Embi, vice-chair of the Department of Biomedical Informatics has received the inaugural distinguished paper award at the American Medical Informatics Association 2012 Summit on Clinical Research Informatics for his paper, "Evaluating Alert Fatigue and Response Patterns to EHR-based Clinical Trial Alerts: Findings from a Randomized, Controlled Study." The full paper will appear in a special issue of the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association scheduled for publication in June 2012.

The Institute for Chinese Studies continue its "Cultures in Contact" lecture series today (4/6) at 1:30 p.m. in 0050 Hagerty Hall with Karen Mancl, OSU professor of food, agriculture and biological engineering. Mancl will deliver "Culture of Water Pollution Control in Rural China."

As part of its Host-Pathogen Seminar Series, the Center for Microbial Interface Biology is hosting Daniel Goldberg on Monday (4/9) at 4 p.m. in 115 Biomedical Research Tower. Goldberg's seminar, "Trial by fire and starvation: how the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum survives in its host," is open to the public. The Host-Pathogen Seminar Series features distinguished national and international scientists in the area of microbe-host interactions.

MBI Colloquium series continues April 9
Brian Smith, entomology, Arizona State University will present the next MBI Colloquium series lecture on Monday (4/9) from 2:30-3:30 p.m. in 355 Jennings Hall. Smith will discuss Plasticity in Early Sensory Coding: It's Role in Solving the Generalization Problem for Complex, Variable Natural Odors.

Policy analyst to discuss immigrants and health reform
Randy Capps, senior policy analyst and demographer at the Migration Policy Institute, will give a talk on Tuesday (4/10) at 12:30 p.m. in 038 Townshend Hall. Capps has recently published national studies on health care coverage of immigrants, trends in public benefit use by immigrant families, and the impact of immigration enforcement activities on children of unauthorized immigrants.

YP4H Biometric Health Screenings at Hidden Benefits Fair
Schedule a 20-minute Your Plan for Health Biometric Health Screening at the Hidden Benefits Fair on Thursday (4/12) from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Ohio Union. The complimentary screening measures vital health values such as blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose. Benefits-eligible faculty and staff can use these biometrics to complete the YP4H Personal Health Assessment. College of Optometry Hosts InfantSEE Program
The College of Optometry is hosting a special program on the American Optometric Association's InfantSEE initiative for students, faculty, staff, and OSU and Columbus community leaders on Friday (4/13). Actor, author, and motivational speaker, Tom Sullivan will speak about his life and accomplishments as a blind person. Two sessions at 33 Fry Hall: for faculty/staff/community leaders from 8-10 a.m.; students from 10 a.m.-noon.

Northstar Café founder to share ideals April 18
On Wednesday (4/18), Kevin Malhame, founder of Northstar Café, will tell how his business started from a desire to serve and celebrate the world around him. Malhame will present the Hospitality Management Speaker Series event from 1-2:15 p.m. in 1008 Evans Lab. The business has grown to three cafes, plus the American Bistro and Third & Hollywood.
