Good Day!
WELCOME TO OSUToday, the latest news and information for faculty and staff of The Ohio State University for Thursday, April 19. The deadline for submissions is noon the prior business day.

OSUToday sponsored by Purchasing, Stores, Receiving and Mail

OSU Purchasing recently awarded contracts to 5 different janitorial supply companies representing 6 major product categories: trash can liners, soaps and sanitizers, tools, paper products and cleaning chemicals/solutions. Contracts were awarded to suppliers based on pricing and product specifications. It was also determined that using OSU Stores and Receiving for distribution and delivery was the best option for the university — both financially and logistically. OSU Stores and Receiving keep janitorial supply costs low and make deliveries within 1 business day in most cases.

Scientists find possible cause of movement defects in spinal muscular atrophy

An abnormally low level of a protein in certain nerve cells is linked to movement problems that characterize the deadly childhood disorder spinal muscular atrophy, new research in animals suggests. Spinal muscular atrophy, or SMA, is caused when a child's motor neurons — nerve cells that send signals from the spinal cord to muscles — produce insufficient amounts of what is called survival motor neuron protein, or SMN. This causes motor neurons to die, leading to muscle weakness and the inability to move. Christine Beattie, associate professor of neuroscience at Ohio State, is lead author of the study.

Chadwick Arboretum & Learning Gardens

Chadwick Arboretum & Learning Gardens is a 60-acre green reserve, providing outreach, education, and a living laboratory of more than 2,000 plants from around the world to students, staff and the community.

In the past year, Chadwick Arboretum & Learning Gardens facilitated several meaningful sustainability initiatives at Ohio State, including earning Tree Campus USA certification for the university, diverting more than two tons of plastic pots from the landfill during the annual pot recycling event, and raising more than $200,000 toward the installation of a green roof on Howlett Hall.

Ohio State faculty and staff can become friends of Chadwick for $35 a year, gaining several membership benefits and supporting an important campus resource in the process.
