Best known for her role as Princess Leia in Star Wars, Fisher will discuss her experiences with addiction and bipolar disorder — as well as her famous Hollywood family — with characteristic bluntness and humor. 2012 Graduate Associate Teaching Award winners announced

The winners of the 40th annual Graduate Associate Teaching Award have been announced. The 2012 winners are: Jarrett Anderson, French and Italian; Leila Ben-Nasr, English; Lindsay Bernhagen, Comparative Studies; Bora Bosna, Mathematics; Sara Cline, Molecular Genetics; Jim Collier, Communication; Joshua Eckroth, Computer Science and Engineering; Casaundra Harbaugh, Psychology; Adam Stier, English; and Scott Stuckman, Environmental Science. This year, 106 graduate students were nominated, and 71 eligible nominees submitted an application portfolio.

Genetic variants may predict those at greatest fracture risk

An international consortium of researchers have identified a group of genes associated with the development of osteoporosis, a debilitating bone disease that cripples more than 10 million Americans a year and costs the U.S. healthcare system an estimated $17 billion annually. Findings from the largest genome-wide association study of osteoporosis appear in Nature Genetics. Rebecca Jackson, an endocrinologist at Ohio State's Wexner Medical Center, is co-author and a member of the GEnetic Factors for OSteoporsis, which led the study.

WOSU invites faculty and staff to celebrate 90th birthday

WOSU Public Media is hosting an open house at the Fawcett Center on Tuesday (4/24) from 3-6 p.m. Tours will run continually; stop by the WOSU reception desk at Fawcett. On April 24, 1922, WOSU had the call letters WEAO and broadcast at 570 AM at about 100 watts. OSU President William Oxley Thompson was the first voice heard and proudly proclaimed the station as the first in Columbus and one of the early pioneers of educational radio.

Murray to discuss role of Iran-Iraq war in Middle East

 Williamson Murray, Minerva Fellow at Naval War College and professor emeritus of history at Ohio State, will discuss "Saddam's World View: The Iran-Iraq War and the Shaping of the Modern Middle East" at 3:30 p.m. Monday (4/30) at the Mershon Center for International Security Studies. Cory Booker is First-Year Distinguished Speaker

 Undergraduate Admissions and First Year Experience welcomes Mayor Cory Booker of Newark, New Jersey, Tuesday (5/1) for a 7:30 p.m. lecture in Thurber Theater at the Drake Performance and Event Center. Considered one of the 100 most influential people in the world by TIME Magazine (2011), Booker is the 2011-2012 First-Year Distinguished Speaker. May 3: Japanese American Resettlement through the Lens

 Japanese American Resettlement through the Lens is the focus of this year's Paul H. and Erika Bourguignon Lecture in Art and Anthropology, to be held Thursday (5/3) at 6:30 p.m. in 100 Mendenhall Lab. Lecture, book signing, reception. Free and open to the public. Author Lane Hirabayashi and photographer Carl Iwasaki look at the experience of Japanese American resettlement through the filter of the War Relocation Authority (WRA)'s 17,000 photos of Americans of Japanese ancestry who spent World War II in prison camps.

Department of Plastic Surgery hosts info session April 24
