New international calling rates for the university's long distance service from OIT take effect on Tuesday (5/1). While rates are decreasing overall, most international locations will now have two separate per-minute rates, a rate for calls made to traditional landline phones and a slightly higher rate for calls made to mobile devices. SUPERMAP OF AVIAN FLU YIELDS NEW INFO ON SOURCE/SPREAD

Scientists have designed a new, interactive map of the spread of the avian flu virus (H5N1) that for the first time incorporates genetic, geographic and evolutionary information that may help predict where the next outbreak of the virus is likely to occur. In the process, they also tested hypotheses about the nature of specific strains of the virus that appear to be heading westward and have the ability to infect humans. A team of biomedical experts, led by Daniel Janies, OSU assistant professor in the Department of Biomedical Informatics, used special software to create an evolutionary tree of the virus’s mutations. KIRWAN INSTITUTE HOSTS AFRICAN AMERICAN MALE CONFERENCE

Ohio State's Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity is hosting “African American Males: Beyond the School to Prison Pipeline and Moving Towards Opportunity,” on Friday (5/11) in the Moritz College of Law's Saxbe Auditorium. The conference will focus on the different and sometimes subtle ways in which the educational system and prison system interact to create disparate situations for African American males, the factors and policies that contribute to the success of black males, and solutions and recommendations for alleviating the disparities males face. BUSINESS LIBRARY DATABASE OF THE MONTH

The Small Business Resource Center database provides access to nearly 300 business plans, thousands of articles with topic overviews supported by statistical tables, charts and graphs. The information is quite current and with items such as newspapers and magazines is updated on a daily basis. Nearly 200 links are provided for reviewed and subject-indexed Web sites. SBRC shows how to start a small business; write a business plan; and buy, sell, finance and grow a business as well as locate and expand a business. Iñaki Ábalos is the next Knowlton School of Architecture Lecture Series guest at 5:30 p.m. today (5/2) in 250 Knowlton Hall. Ábalos and Juan Herreros co-founded Ábalos & Herreros Arquitectos in 1984. ANNUAL SCHLAM LECTURE IN GREEK AND LATIN MAY 3

Richard Thomas, Harvard University, will present the Department of Greek and Latin’s annual Schlam Lecture at 4:30 p.m. Thursday (5/3) in 10 Page Hall. The lecture, “The Streets of Rome: Bob Dylan and the Classics” will explore Dylan's contact with the ancient worlds of Greece and Rome, evident in particular in the Dylan of the last decade. BRANDT TO DISCUSS NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN MASS LITERACY

Deborah Brandt, professor of English at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, will deliver “Writing Now: New Developments in Mass Literacy” from 4-5:30 p.m. Thursday (5/3) in 264 MacQuigg Lab. The talk is free and open to the public. LIBRARIES READALOUD PROGRAM CONTINUES MAY 3

The OSU Libraries ReadAloud program continues from 3-4 p.m. Thursday (5/3) in the Wexner Cafe featuring Karen Bell, dean of the College of the Arts, and Vickie Blaine, Dance faculty emeritus, with a reading adaptation of “Heel Talk,” that examines self-image, motherhood, divorce, and work through a focus on aging and finding just the right shoe. OSU HEARING PROFESSIONALS HOST PUBLIC EVENT

In celebration of May as Better Speech and Hearing Month, the Ohio State Hearing Professionals are hosting a two-day event with demonstrations of new hearing aid technology and free hearing screenings.
