New international calling rates for the university's long distance service from OIT take effect on Tuesday (5/1). While rates are decreasing overall, most international locations will now have two separate per-minute rates, a rate for calls made to traditional landline phones and a slightly higher rate for calls made to mobile devices. Details and rates are available online, or call 688-HELP and select option 2.

BROWN RECEIVES FULBRIGHT-HAYS FACULTY RESEARCH ABROAD GRANT

Phillip Brown, OSU associate professor of History is the recipient of the prestigious Fulbright-Hays Faculty Research Abroad grant. The grant will allow him to spend a year in Japan. Brown’s research project, “Coping with Disaster: Civil Engineering, Floods and Landslides in the Modernization of Japan” analyzes societies' response to the hazards through a study of Niigata prefecture, home of Japan's longest river, the Shinano. DANCE DOWNTOWN KICKS OFF TODAY

The Department of Dance brings its popular show, Dance Downtown Rocks! to the Riffe Center’s Capitol Theatre at 8 p.m. today (5/3)-Saturday (5/5). OSU dancers will perform in the evening event, which spotlights the Vernon Reid Project and Trisha Brown's Set and Reset/Reset. The Vernon Reid Project is rock and roll, up close and live, with 27 dancers and the musicians in Reid's New York band Masque giving a powerful performance. RETIRING PROFESSOR CLOSES OSU NEWARK LECTURE SERIES TODAY

Ohio State Newark will conclude its 2006-07 Faculty Lecture Series with a lecture by Sara Staats, professor of psychology, at 7 p.m. today (5/3) in the Reese Center Ballroom. HUGHES IS MAY 4 MECHANICAL ENGINEERING LECTURER

Thomas J.R. Hughes, professor of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics, and Computational and Applied Mathematics, University of Texas at Austin, is the guest speaker of the Mechanical Engineering Department’s 125th Anniversary Distinguished Lecture Series at 2:30 p.m. Friday (5/4) in 001 Scott Laboratory. DIVERSITY PIONEER TO DISCUSS IMPLICATIONS FOR HIGHER EDUCATION

Joseph L. White, a pioneer in psychology and mental health for African Americans, will present “Implications of Diversity in Higher Education,” at 12:45 p.m. Friday (5/4) in the Frank Hale Cultural Center. The lecture is part of the College of Education and Human Ecology’s 12th Annual Diversity Forum and Graduate Student Symposium. WRITING CENTER OFFERS DISSERTATION WRITING GROUPS

Writing Center groups are open to Ph.D. students and candidates in any discipline who are writing their dissertation. Each group will have 2-4 writers and meet one hour per week at an appointed time, determined by their availability. The meetings are designed to help students stay motivated, find out what other Ph.D. students are doing, and get careful, individualized feedback on work from colleagues and a WC Consultant simultaneously. EARN POINTS FOR TAKING IMPROVED PHA

Faculty and staff should take the Personal Health Assessment every 12 months for a better understanding of their health status and risks. Several improvements were recently made to the confidential online questionnaire making it easier for Ohio State employees to get a complete picture of their health, including the automatic entry of health screening results from one of the free campus PHA screening events into the PHA questionnaire. OSU STUDENTS TO PRESENT ANNUAL SPRING MUSICAL FOR CHARITY

Ohio State’s entirely student-run musical theater group, Off the Lake Productions, is presenting its annual spring musical, “Children of Eden” at 8 p.m. May 4, 5, 10, 11, and 12 in Hitchcock Hall. Admission is an imperishable food item, which will be donated to the Mid-Ohio Foodbank. Children of Eden is a musical by Stephen Schwartz (Wicked) that focuses on the book of Genesis and explores themes of family, love, and tough decisions, to name a few. Contact: Huneke.9@osu.edu
