Headline newsBREWER TO DELIVER DISTINGUISHED LECTURE MAY 17Marilynn Brewer, Ohio Eminent Scholar in Social Psychology at Ohio State, will deliver the University Distinguished Lecture at 4 p.m. Thursday (5/17) in the Wexner Center Film/Video Theater. Brewer will discuss “The Human Dilemma: Being the Same and Different at the Same Time.” One of the university’s highest honors for a senior faculty member, the lectureship is awarded in recognition of outstanding academic achievement, particularly, but not exclusively, in research, scholarship or creative activity. NEGI TO DISCUSS ‘IS CHINA COLONIZING AFRICA’ TODAYThe College of Humanities and the Department of African American and African Studies will present a lecture by Rohit Negi, a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Geography, from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Wednesday (5/16) in 347 University Hall. Negi will deliver “Is China Colonizing Africa? Paranoia, Politics, and the View from Neoliberal Zambia.” All interested in the topic are invited to attend. Alexander Thompson, OSU assistant professor of Political Science, will discuss the global implications of climate change and the growing need for international cooperation. Thompson has research and teaching interests in international relations and U.S. foreign policy, with particular emphasis on international organizations and international environmental politics. RSVP to: JGCLCEvents@jgippm.ohio-state.edu CZERNIAK TO LECTURE ON LOCATING LANDSCAPE: OLIN/EISENMANJulia Czerniak, associate professor at Syracuse University School of Architecture, will deliver “Locating Landscape: Olin/Eisenman” at 5:30 p.m. today (5/16) in 250 Knowlton Hall. Czerniak is educated as both an architect and landscape architect and her research and practice focus on the intersection of these disciplines. Read More > OHIO STATE HOSTS CPS DAY TODAYNearly 3,000 sixth-graders from Columbus Public Schools will visit campus today (5/16) for CPS Day. The event includes an educational pep rally at 10 a.m. in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium followed by a sold-out Buckeye baseball game vs. North Florida at 12:05 p.m. at Bill Davis Stadium. Weather permitting, a helicopter will land in Jesse Owens for an ROTC demonstration of a rescue operation. Traffic on Fred Taylor Drive will be halted briefly at approximately 10:40 a.m. to accommodate the demonstration. CPS Day is designed to show young students the opportunities for and advantages of higher education and the importance of staying in school. Khaliq will speak to a group of students in the Veterinary Public Health specialty from 1-2 p.m. today (5/16) in the Funderberg Conference Room in Sisson Hall. Contact: 292-3752 or weber.254@osu.edu TRIBUNE THEATRE CRITIC TO PRESENT MAY 17 LECTUREThe Department of Theatre is bringing OSU alumnus Chris Jones, chief theatre critic for the Chicago Tribune, to campus Thursday (5/17) for a lecture, “Every Night in the Dark: A Critic Debunks the Pervasive Myths Surrounding Contemporary American Theatre.” The lecture begins at 4:30 p.m. in Roy Bowen Theatre, Drake Performance Center, and is free and open to all. Jones has reviewed theatre, comedy, improv and other forms of live entertainment for the Tribune for more than a decade. Jones earned a doctorate in theatre from Ohio State, and began his career writing film reviews for WCBE-FM in Columbus.
