Headline newsUSAC TOWN MEETING WITH PRESIDENT HOLBROOK TODAYThe University Staff Advisory Committee is hosting the final Town Meeting with President Karen Holbrook, from noon-1 p.m. today (5/18) in 130 Drinko Hall. The event will also be Web cast at the following locations: Lima Campus, 310K Galvin Hall; Mansfield Campus, 476 Ovalwood; and the Wooster Campus OARDC, 130 Research Services. Holbrook will be joined by Executive Vice President and Provost Barbara Snyder, Senior Vice President for Business and Finance Bill Shkurti, and Associate Vice President of Human Resources Larry Lewellen. SHAH IS ASIAN AMERICAN DISTINGUISHED LECTURER TODAYNayan Shah, professor at the University of California-San Diego, will deliver the Asian American Studies program’s annual Distinguished Lecture in Asian American History from 11 a.m.-noon today (5/18) at the Hale Cultural Center. Shah will discuss “Intimacy, Strangers and Democratic Life in Early 20th Century Asia America.” A lunch reception from noon-2 p.m. will follow the lecture. Shah is the author of “Contagious Divides: Epidemics and Race in San Francisco’s Chinatown” (2001) - winner of the Association for Asian American Studies History Book Award. The event is free and open to the public. Contact: ponce.8@osu.edu DISTINGUISHED UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH MENTORS ANNOUNCEDRobert Baiocchi (Internal Medicine), Donald Dean (Biochemistry), John Grinstead (Spanish and Portuguese), Irfan Nooruddin (Political Science), and Brian Winer (Physics) were recognized for their exceptional service as faculty research mentors for undergraduate students at the Denman Undergraduate Research Forum held Wednesday (5/16). More than 40 student presenters submitted nominations for the new Distinguished Undergraduate Research Mentor awards. Student nominators consistently described the outstanding support and guidance they received from faculty, as well as the life-changing educational and personal impact that conducting research as an undergraduate creates. CITI REFRESHER COURSE NOW AVAILABLEContinuing education is required every three years for all investigators and key personnel who participate in human subjects research. The Web-based refresher course licensed by the Collaborative IRB Training Initiative is used to meet this requirement. Training for all individuals participating on a project must be current before IRB review of new or continuing research. Additional information about the CITI courses in human subjects protection is available online. SPEAKER TO ADDRESS ATTITUDES TOWARD GROUP WORKJennifer Foster, senior lecturer at the School of Commerce, Division of Business, University of South Australia, will deliver “Can Positive Group Experiences Shift Attitudes toward Group Work?” at noon Monday (5/21) at the Mershon Center for International Security Studies, 1501 Neil Ave. The lecture examines attitudes toward working in teams and whether they can be changed. Read More > CHARITY DINNER, DAILY BREAD SCREENING MAY 21The Department of Art is organizing a fundraising event and dinner for the Mid-Ohio Foodbank Operation Feed Campaign that will begin at 6 p.m. Monday (5/21) at the Wexner Center. “Food For Thought” will include a dinner of bean soup and light spring fare catered by Cameron Mitchell Restaurants. At 8 p.m. is a screening of the award-winning 2006 documentary film: “Our Daily Bread.” Dinner guests and the general public are welcome to attend the screening in the Wexner Film/Video Theater; admission is a donation of a canned or non-perishable food item. Join in on a reading of the essays “Odyssey” and “Clandeboye” by Rick Perkins of the National Park Service and Christina Wieg from the Ohio EPA, from 3-4 p.m. Thursday (5/24) at the Wilma H. Schiermeier Olentangy River Wetlands Research Park. Enjoy a guided or a self guided tour of the Wetlands after the reading and explore the 25 acres of created and restored wetlands.
