Good Day!
Headline newsRESEARCHERS FIND NEW SPECIES OF SEA ANEMONEResearchers cruising for creatures that live in the deepest parts
of the Pacific Ocean found a new species of sea anemone living in the
unlikeliest of habitats - the carcass of a dead whale. A marine biologist
would say that discovering a new sea anemone isn't so unusual. But
finding one that calls a dead whale home is what sets this new creature
apart. Since the scientists who initially found these animals weren't
sea anemone specialists, they sent the 10 specimens they collected
to Meg Daly, OSU assistant professor of evolution, ecology and organismal
biology. Daly runs one of the very few laboratories in the world equipped
to study sea anemones. Contact: Daly.66@osu.edu
LECTURER TO ADDRESS GROWING PROBLEM IN SCIENTIFIC STUDIESJames O. Berger, professor at Duke University and member of the National
Academy of Sciences, will deliver the Department of Statistics' annual
Chhotey Lal and Mohra Devi Rustagi Memorial Lecture at 3:30 p.m. Thursday
(5/24) in Room 170 of the Eighteenth Avenue Building. Berger will address
one of the toughest challenges facing researchers today - how to account
for uncertainty in scientific studies of large databases - and discuss
new strategies for dealing with uncertainty. It's a growing problem
for studies in bioinformatics, epidemiology, medicine, and - increasingly
- physics and astronomy. Contact: 292-5194 or england@stat.osu.edu OSUTODAY SEEKS YOUR FEEDBACKUniversity Relations has created a questionnaire to measure the effectiveness and impact of OSU Today.
