OSU RECOGNIZED FOR COMMITMENT TO ADOPTION

Ohio State has been commended for its commitment to families formed through adoption and has been ranked ninth on a list of Ohio's 10 Best Adoption-Friendly Workplaces for 2008 by the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption. Ohio State also has been ranked fourth in the education industry. The Best Workplaces list is being publicized in Employee Benefit News magazine, online at www.AdoptionFriendlyWorkplace.org, and in media releases. The announcement was made on Thursday (5/1). VOLUNTEER FOR SHINGLES VACCINE RESEARCH STUDY. Doctors are seeking healthy folks between the ages of 50 and 59 to join a research study to evaluate the investigational use of an approved vaccine to prevent shingles, which is also known as herpes zoster, or zoster. THREE OSU STUDENTS GARNER PHI KAPPA PHI STUDY ABROAD GRANTS

Honors students Robert Bonnaci, Elizabeth Lemons and Jodi Stewart have each earned a Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grant to support their upcoming international experiences. Each year, Phi Kappa Phi awards 50 study abroad grants of $1,000 each with a maximum of three awards per institution. SCHOOL OF MUSIC HOSTS MEMORIAL CONCERT MAY 5

The School of Music will remember Michael Davis, violin, in a memorial concert at 8 p.m. Monday (5/5) in Weigel Auditorium. Davis taught violin at OSU from 1976-2004 and returned as an emeritus professor in 2006. He died of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease) on Sunday (3/2). The concert will be performed by Nelson Harper on piano, OSU School of Music faculty, and several former students and colleagues from the Columbus Symphony and ProMusica. OSU NEWARK CINCO DE MAYO CELEBRATION MAY 5

Ohio State Newark is hosting a Cinco de Mayo celebration at 7 p.m. Monday (5/5) in the John Gilbert Reese Center. The celebration will feature a live performance from Jesse Ponce and his five-piece band, and Mexican food provided by Newark restaurant Puerto Vallarta. The event is free and open to the public. SELECTED READINGS WITH FREDERIC TUTEN MAY 6

Frederic Tuten, author of numerous novels, including "Tintin in the New World" and "The Green Hour" will read selections from his works on Tuesday (5/6) in the Faculty Club Alphabet Rooms. A reception will begin at 6:30 p.m., with the readings starting at 7 p.m. A professor in the graduate fiction-writing program at the City College of New York, Tuten received a Guggenheim Fellowship for Creative Writing from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. His literary archives are part of the Contemporary American Literature Manuscripts of the OSU Libraries Rare Books and Manuscripts Library. Contact: 292-5938

DENTISTRY'S ANNUAL CLINICAL EXCELLENCE DAY MAY 7

The public is invited to attend the College of Dentistry's fourth Annual Clinical Excellence Day on Wednesday (5/7). The event allows fourth-year dental students to showcase their clinical skills to the college and community. Attorney Thomas Perez, the current Secretary for the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation will deliver the keynote address at 9 a.m. in 1187 Postle Hall. BEING A PI AT OSU - ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Office of Research is providing a two-hour workshop for faculty and research scientists at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday (5/7) at the Research Foundation. Learn about the roles and responsibilities of principal investigators and hear an overview of the various Office of Research support units (Research Foundation, Office of Responsible Research Practices, Technology Licensing and Commercialization, University Laboratory Animal Resources, and Office of Research Compliance) and the services they provide to researchers. Registration is required and available online.

SPRING COMMENCEMENT FACULTY INFORMATION

All faculty planning to march in the academic processional at spring commencement on Sunday (6/8) in Ohio Stadium should notify their college dean’s office by Friday (5/30). Faculty participants should report to the north rotunda entrance of Ohio Stadium with cap and gown on commencement day. Assembly for the faculty processional will be under the north ramp in the stadium corridor. Faculty should be robed and assembled by 12:30 p.m. For further details, call the Office of Commencement and Special Events at 292-9051.

OSU, BATTELLE ISSUE NATIONAL BIKE TO WORK WEEK CHALLENGE

National Bike to Work Week begins Monday (5/12), and Ohio State has made a friendly challenge with Battelle to see who can replace the most automobile commutes with bicycle commutes, and bike the most miles. Student organization Bike OSU is teaming up with Consider Biking, a local bicycle advocacy organization, to sponsor the event, and is looking for participants to help Ohio State win the challenge. Several OSU events are planned, including a movie screening at Knowlton Hall about automobile congestion, a bicycling and the law workshop in Denney Hall, and a bike tour of Columbus that begins at Ohio State. HISTORY OF BLACK COLUMBUS CONFERENCE MAY 3

The Department of African American and African Studies Community Extension Center will host the fifth Annual History of Black Columbus Conference from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturday (5/3) at the Community Extension Center, 905 Mount Vernon Ave. The conference theme is the Health of the Black Family: Mind, Body and Spirit, and the event will feature panel discussions and presentations by OSU faculty, community members and local public health officials. Pre-registration for the conference is $10, $5 for students and senior citizens (age 60 and older) and includes a continental breakfast and lunch. EARTHWORKS DAY AT THE NEWARK CAMPUS MAY 3

A symposium on the Newark Earthworks and two World Heritage sites: Stonehenge (England) and the Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon (Mexico), will take place from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturday (5/3) in the Reese Conference Center on the Newark campus. Exhibits and speakers on the origins of these sites, the cosmologies they embody and contemporary use are scheduled, as well as a graduate student art exhibit on the impact of World Heritage status. MAY 12 BIO SCIENCES GOLF OUTING TO SUPPORT SCHOLARSHIPS

Join College of Biological Sciences alumni (including former Buckeye quarterback Craig Krenzel), faculty, staff and students at the sixth Annual Biological Sciences Golf Outing, to be held on the newly-renovated OSU Scarlet Course on Monday (5/12). Registration includes lunch, dinner, beverages on the course and golf challenges with prizes.
