OSU ATHLETICS DEPARTMENT TO RECEIVE DIVERSITY AWARD

The Ohio State athletics department has been selected to receive a Diversity in Athletics Award in the category of Overall Excellence in Diversity, to be presented Wednesday (6/11) at the Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas, site of the 2008 National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics Convention. Using independent research conducted by the Laboratory for Diversity in Sport at Texas A&M and supported by the NCAA, the award winners are those that have achieved the highest total combined scores in the areas of diversity strategy, gender diversity of departmental employees, racial diversity of departmental employees, value and attitudinal diversity of departmental employees, graduation of African-American female and male student-athletes, and gender equity compliance.

COOPER ELECTED TO COLLEGE FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME

Former Ohio State football coach John Cooper was elected Thursday (5/1) to the College Football Hall of Fame. Head coach from 1988-2000, Cooper compiled a record at OSU of 111-43-4. Prior to joining Ohio State, he coached at Tulsa and Arizona State. Commenting on Cooper’s induction, President E. Gordon Gee said, “John Cooper made significant contributions to college football and to Ohio State in particular. He's a great coach, a fine teacher and a true gentleman. I am proud to call him my friend and thrilled that he is being inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.” Read more >

TODAY: HOME BUYING/SELLING SEMINAR OPEN TO ALL

The university community is invited to attend an informative talk and open Q&A session on the central Ohio real estate market from 3-5 p.m. today (5/6) in 120 Baker Systems Engineering. Bill LaFayette, OSU lecturer and vice president, economic development for the Columbus Chamber, will share his views on the current status of and the inherent stability of the Columbus housing market. PANEL DISCUSSION: CURRENT STATE OF EDUCATION IN THE U.S.

The John Glenn Civic Leadership Council is hosting a discussion on the challenges facing school systems in America at 7 p.m. Thursday (5/8) in the Policy Forum of Page Hall. Diane Ging from Columbus City Schools’ Higher Education Partnership will discuss the current state of education in the region, highlighting geographic disparities in educational opportunity and attainment levels and the impact of recent federal education policies. Ohio State is celebrating the International Day for Sharing Life Stories with a local slate of events including three storytelling and discussion programs in two venues to mark the global observance. VIEW ONCAMPUS’ TOP 3 ON 2 FEATURE ONLINE

Each issue, onCampus profiles a university employee, a top news item and a photo in its Top 3 on 2 feature. The current issue features a spotlight on Louis Hominga, academic coordinator at Ohio State Marion. In addition, onCampus notes that three Ohio State faculty are among the 190 artists, scholars and scientists to be named recipients of 2008 Guggenheim Fellowships. The photo illustrates President E. OSU, IU TEAM UP FOR TRANSLATION/TRANSFORMATION CONFERENCE

Translation/Transformation, a joint conference hosted by the Ohio State Folklore Student Association and the Indiana University Folklore and Ethnomusicology Student Associations will take place Friday (5/16)-Saturday (5/17) in 311 Denney Hall. The keynote speaker is OSU alum Alan Govenar, a scholar, filmmaker and playwright whose work particularly focuses on African-American music. The winner of the Patrick B. MAY 10 EVENING OF DANCE TO BENEFIT AIDS ORGANIZATIONS

The Department of Dance is collaborating with Dancers Responding to AIDS to present an evening of dance featuring OSU student organizations, Columbus dance studios and professional dance companies at 7 p.m. Saturday (5/10) in the Riffe Center’s Capitol Theatre in downtown Columbus. The event will benefit DRA, a program of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, which has donated $176,000 to Columbus AIDS organizations over the past decade. Fred Cope, OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center, is the next Science Cafe Columbus guest lecturer at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday (5/7) in the Study Place Along High (SPAH), 1836 N. OSC OFFERS PERFORMANCE TUNING FOR MULTI-CORE ARCHITECTURES

The Ohio Supercomputer Center on West Campus is hosting a workshop, Performance Tuning for Multi-Core Architectures, from 9:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Wednesday (5/14)-Thursday (5/15) at OSC. The workshop provides an overview of performance tuning techniques for the new generation of multi-core processors, such as those used in OSC's Glenn system.
