ANXIETY, MOOD DISORDERS PUT CANCER PATIENTS AT RISK FOR PTSD

Breast cancer patients who have a prior history of mood and anxiety disorders are at a much higher risk of experiencing posttraumatic stress disorder following their diagnosis, new research suggests. A study of 74 breast cancer patients at the OSU Medical Center found that 16 percent of them suffered from PTSD 18 months after diagnosis. The findings suggest that doctors should screen newly diagnosed breast cancer patients for past mood disorders. Read more >

Men and women who have diabetes may be eligible to participate in a 36-week study to understand the role of dietary oils in combination with medicine to control body weight and blood sugar. Participants described as follows: Type 2 Diabetes, no current diabetes medications, ages 30-70, non-smoker. Receive dietary oil supplements and free diabetes medications. The study includes nine visits to OSU's Davis Medical Research Center, diet and activity assessments, collection of blood and tissue samples, and body measurements. EASC ASIAN WRITERS SERIES FEATURES AKU WUWU TODAY

The East Asian Studies Center Asian Writers Series is presenting a reading of Nuosu Language Poetry by Aku Wuwu, professor of ethnic minority studies at the Southwest Nationalities University, Chengdu, Sichuan at 4 p.m. today (5/7) in 180 Hagerty Hall. Wuwu (aka Luo Qingchun) is a performance poet of the Nuosu (Yi) people of the Cool Mountains of Southwest China. He will read from his corpus of Nuosu language poetry accompanied in English translation by professor Mark Bender. Read more >

GUEST SPEAKER TO DELIVER WIRELESS NETWORKS TALK

Patrick Thiran, professor at Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne in Switzerland, will present his talk "Phase Transitions in Wireless Multi-hop Networks" from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Monday (5/12) in 260 Dreese Labs. AUTHOR BLOOM IS MAY 14 DIVERSITY LECTURE SERIES GUEST

The President and Provost’s Diversity Lecture and Cultural Arts Series will host author Amy Bloom as its guest lecturer at 7 p.m. Wednesday (5/14) in the Wexner Center’s Film and Video Theater. Bloom’s first book of nonfiction, Normal: Transsexual CEOs, Crossdressing Cops, and Hermaphrodites with Attitude, is an exploration of the varieties of gender. GEE TO HELP DIGITAL UNION LAUNCH NEW STUDIO MAY 21

The Digital Union is celebrating its fourth anniversary on Wednesday (5/21) with the launch of the Learning Collaboration Studio and the annual showcase featuring highlights of faculty and student projects completed in the past year. MUSIC STUDENTS PLAN EVENT TO SUPPORT COLUMBUS SYMPHONY

Students in the School of Music are hosting an evening out for 160-200 students and faculty on Saturday (5/10) to show support for the Columbus Symphony. For $15, the package includes symphony concert tickets, a wristband, t-shirt and a chance to meet Maestro Junichi Hirokami and symphony musicians after the concert at the After Five lounge, where live music will be provided by OSU jazz musicians. CABS buses will leave the School of Music at 7:15 p.m. The OSU School of Music, College of the Arts and Colleges of the Arts and Sciences support the event. Read more >
