Headline news$1 MILLION GIFT DOUBLES ENDOWMENT TO SUPPORT SCHOLARSHIPS FOR STUDY ABROAD-- More Ohio State students will have an opportunity to receive financial assistance to study abroad as a result of a $1 million gift from the Robert F. Wolfe and Edgar T. Wolfe Foundation. This gift doubles the endowment that supports the Wolfe Study Abroad Scholarship Fund and was presented to President E. Gordon Gee at the ninth annual Wolfe Study Abroad Recognition Luncheon on Thursday (5/1). The Wolfe Study Abroad Scholarships have made it possible for more than 180 Ohio State students to study abroad in 39 different countries. “This gift represents an important step toward achieving Ohio State’s goal of providing as many students as possible with the ability to study abroad and explore different social and economic cultures in another country, said Dieter Wanner, interim associate provost of International Affairs. “The Wolfe Study Abroad Scholarships will continue to enable the university to attract those students seeking ways to enrich their academic program though an international experience.” For more information about study abroad programs at Ohio State, visit http://oia.osu.edu. OHIO STATE HOSTS ANNUAL STATE SCIENCE DAY MAY 10On Saturday (5/10) more than 1,000 aspiring science, technology, engineering, and mathematics students in grades seven-12 from all 65 Ohio counties will exhibit their science research projects at the 60th annual State Science Day hosted by Ohio State in the French Field House. The STEM scholars will vie for more than $1.9 million in scholarships and awards. Read more > ANNUAL OHIOANA BOOK FESTIVAL MAY 10The university community is invited to the second annual “Ohioana Book Festival: Celebrating Ohio’s Authors,” presented by the Ohioana Library at the State Library of Ohio from 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturday (5/10). The event is free and open to the public. Activities include panel discussions, readings, book signings, a book fair, activities for children, live entertainment and food vendors. The Institute for Collaborative Research and Public Humanities, the Colleges of the Arts and Sciences, University Libraries, and WOSU are partners with the Ohioana Library for the festival. Thiran is currently active in the analysis and design of wireless multi-hop networks and in network monitoring. On Tuesday (5/13), Heather Hampel, genetics counselor at the James Cancer Hospital, will discuss "Does Breast Cancer Run in your Family? Hereditary Breast-Ovarian Cancer Syndrome." Read more > MS ROUNDTABLE VIDEOCONFERENCING DEMO MAY 15The Digital Union will present a demo of a new hardware and software solution that enables faculty, staff and students to conduct virtual meetings while maintaining the ability to see each other. Representatives will demonstrate the new hardware, called Microsoft RoundTable and software, called Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007. Register online EAST ASIAN STUDIES UNDERGRADUATE WRITING PRIZEThe East Asian Studies Center is seeking quality research papers and essays from Ohio State students for this year’s Undergraduate Writing Prize competition. Faculty are encouraged to recommend students to submit their work for consideration. The papers/essays can derive from any discipline and methodological framework as long as issues pertinent to East Asia are the focus of the paper or form a vital component of a comparative project. All work must have been written in English for courses taught between June 2007 and June 2008. Prizes will be awarded and the deadline for submission is Friday (6/6). TEMPORARY FLEXIBLE SPENDING ACCOUNT PROCESSING DELAYSThe Student Information and Human Resources systems will be integrated Thursday (5/22)-Monday (5/26). As a result, there will be a temporary suspension on the processing of Flexible Spending Account reimbursement checks during the system downtime. FSA claims submitted during the week of Monday (5/19) will be processed the week of Monday (5/26). Normal processing of FSA claims will resume on Tuesday (5/27).
