Headline newsOHIO STATE GOES HIGH-TECH WITH SPORTS MEDICINE RESEARCHWhile high speed cameras, 3-D motion tracking computers and strategically placed reflectors seem like something from Hollywood, researchers at Ohio State’s Sports Medicine Center are using them to break down subtle movements that give clues about why some athletes are at greater risk for injury. Ajit Chaudhari, director of biomechanical research, oversees the new biomechanics laboratory, a state-of-the-art facility advancing the most cutting-edge injury prevention and performance enhancement programs. Read more > COLLEGE OF PHARMACY RESEARCH DAY MAY 19The College of Pharmacy Research Day 2008, set for Monday (5/19) in the Biomedical Research Tower, includes a full day of poster presentations of current research projects in pharmaceutical sciences and a symposium in celebration of Sylvan Frank's 38 years of research, teaching and service at OSU. Frank, professor of Pharmaceutics and associate dean for Professional Programs, will deliver "Pharmaceutics: A Personal Journey." Additional speakers include Provost Joseph Alutto, presenting "Partnerships in Academia and Industry." Read more > INTERNATIONAL STUDIES CELEBRATES 65TH ANNIVERSARYThe university community is invited to attend the kick-off event for the 65th anniversary of the Undergraduate International Studies Program on Thursday (5/15), beginning with a 3 p.m. reception on the west lawn of University Hall. At 3:30 p.m. in 100 Independence Hall Dick Sisson, former provost and political science professor will deliver welcoming remarks followed by a keynote address by John Mueller, professor of political science and Woody Hayes Chair of National Security Studies at the Mershon Center for International Security Studies. Mueller will discuss "Trends in International Relations." Read more > COMIC ARTIST TERRY MOORE IS WEXNER CENTER GUESTTerry Moore, one of the most influential comics artist/writers working today, will speak at the Wexner Center Film/Video Theater at 7 p.m. Thursday (5/15). A book signing will follow. Moore is best known for his epic and unpredictable comic Strangers in Paradise and is a key figure in the comics self-publishing movement. The event is co-sponsored by the Wexner Center for the Arts and the Cartoon Research Library in conjunction with the exhibition, Jeff Smith: Bone and Beyond. Contact: 292-3535. Read more > MERKEL TO DISCUSS SUSTAINABILITY IN HIGHER EDUCATIONJim Merkel, formerly of Dartmouth College, will present a seminar on campus sustainability from 2-3 p.m. Friday (5/16) in the Smith Seminar Room, Physics Research Building. Merkel will share his experiences in working as Dartmouth College’s sustainability coordinator as well as highlight programs from leading green campuses. Bloom’s first book of nonfiction, Normal: Transsexual CEOs, Crossdressing Cops, and Hermaphrodites with Attitude, is an exploration of the varieties of gender. MERSHON CENTER OFFERS STUDY ABROAD SCHOLARSHIPThe Mershon Center for International Security Studies has established the Ralph D. Mershon Study Abroad Scholarship to support undergraduates who wish to enhance their educational experience by studying in a foreign country. Students are encouraged to take foreign language courses, especially those deemed critical for national security, such as Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Hindi, Farsi, and others. Priority will be given to students who are preparing for a career related to international security studies. Scholarships of up to $2,000 each will be awarded. Apply before Sunday (6/1).
