The Wexner Center's International Performing Arts Series for Families concludes with a magical theater production from Italy. In The Japanese Garden, intended for children ages 4 and up, company members perform on and invite kids in the audience to interact with a multimedia "garden carpet" that responds to movement, ultimately becoming a Japanese garden complete with lily pads and bonsai trees. Performances are Friday (5/23)-Sunday (5/25), and the carpet is on public view Tuesday (5/20)-Saturday (5/24). Read more >

OSU DOCTOR HONORED FOR INTELLECTUAL DISABILITY RESEARCH

Early career research in intellectual development has won two awards for Luc Lecavalier, director of the child unit of behavior support services at Ohio State’s Nisonger Center. Lecavalier has been selected as the recipient of the 2008 Early Career Award by the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, and by Division 33 for intellectual and developmental disabilities of the American Psychological Association for early career research. Lecavalier's research focuses on diagnosis of behavior and psychiatric problems in individuals with intellectual disability including autism spectrum disorders. QUESTION OF GLOBAL WARMING: WHAT DO WE REALLY KNOW? MAY 16

In 2007, the International Panel on Climate Change stated that the last half of the 20th century was the warmest 50-year period in the past 1,300 years. But how do we know that it’s warmer now than in the Medieval Warm Period, when Vikings settled in Greenland? Stephen McIntyre will discuss the statistical and scientific problems involved in trying to compare the two periods with any confidence and to reach acceptable answers, at 2:30 p.m. Friday (5/16) in E001 Scott Lab. OSU URBAN ARTS SPACE SPECIAL PROGRAMS TODAY, FRIDAY

The College of the Arts is hosting special programs this week at the OSU Urban Arts Space, 50 W. Town St. All are free and open to the public. From 6:30-7:30 p.m. today (5/15), a panel discussion with Marie Cieri, OSU assistant professor of Geography and three MFA art students will discuss "Location, Location, Location." From 11-11:30 a.m. Friday (5/16), high school students from the Arts and College Prep Academy in Columbus will share stories told through dance, music and readings for National Storytelling Day. Following the presentation, Department of Dance students will hold an open rehearsal for the Trisha Brown piece Sololos (1976); a visiting professor from Brown’s company will be on hand. CELEBRATE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF STORYTELLING MAY 16

Ohio State is celebrating the International Day for Sharing Life Stories Friday (5/16) with a local slate of events including three storytelling and discussion programs in two venues to mark the global observance. The academic community views storytelling as a valued method of communication; stories can foster new associations and understanding in many areas of study. LECTURE SERIES FEATURES JAPANESE SHÔJO MANGA ROMANCE COMICS

The East Asian Lecture Series: The History of Popular Culture in Japan will feature Deborah Shamoon discussing Shôjo manga, or romance comics for teenage girls, an extremely popular and prominent genre of comics in Japan, at 1:30 p.m. Friday (5/16) in 115 Mendenhall Lab. BLUEPRINT:COLLEGE PREPARES PARENTS. CHILDREN FOR COLLEGE

Blueprint:College is a six-week series of courses for 55 parents and their elementary school children from Columbus City Schools designed to give first-generation, low-income, and/or minority parents tips on preparing their children for college and convey the importance of a college education to their children. Led by Undergraduate Admissions and First Year Experience with assistance from the Economic Access Initiative, the P-12 Project, and Columbus City Schools. Families will spend the day on campus Saturday (5/17) and participate in a tour, have lunch with first generation faculty and staff at the Hale Cultural Center and attend academic exploration sessions. MIT PROFESSOR TO DISCUSS BEHAVIORAL DECISION MAKING MAY 22

Dan Ariely, the Alfred P. Sloan Professor of Behavioral Economics at MIT and author of the New York Times best-seller Predictably Irrational will be on campus on Thursday (5/22) for two presentations in 35 Psychology Building. "Beer, Vinegar, Energy Drinks, and Painkillers: The Influence of Expectations on Experiences" will take place at noon; "(Dis)honesty" begins at 3 p.m. No RSVP is necessary. YIDDISH THEATRE COMES TO OHIO STATE

The Ohio State-Michigan rivalry comes to the stage when alumni Rueben and Dorothy Silver perform “Laughter in Three Languages: English, Yiddish and Yinglish” from 4-6 p.m. Thursday (5/22) in 180 Hagerty Hall. The performance tells the humorous story of a recent Yiddish-speaking immigrant who stumbles upon an OSU-Michigan football game and cheers for both sides. The event is sponsored by OSU Students of Yiddish, the Foreign Language Center, and the departments of Theater, Germanic Languages and Literatures, and Slavic and Eastern European Languages.
