RESEARCH COMMUNICATIONS LAUNCHES NEW RESEARCH BLOG

Research Communications launched a new blog, On Research ... on Thursday (5/15) designed to broaden explanations of what goes on in the research process, and to place research in a larger context. Writers will use the blog to share some of the behind-the-scenes information, to make the picture they paint of how science is done just a little more vibrant for all to see. SENATOR MILLER TO VISIT SCHOOL OF EDUCATIONAL POLICY & LEADERSHIP

Ohio Senator Ray Miller (D-Columbus) is the guest speaker for the Diversity Lecture Series at the School of Educational Policy and Leadership at 11:30 a.m. Monday (5/19) in 136 Ramseyer Hall. ROTC PLANS AFTERNOON GUN SALUTE PRACTICE TODAY

TODAY: MERKEL TO DISCUSS SUSTAINABILITY IN HIGHER EDUCATION

Jim Merkel, formerly of Dartmouth College, will present a seminar on campus sustainability from 2-3 p.m. today (5/16) in the Smith Seminar Room, Physics Research Building. Merkel will share his experiences in working as Dartmouth College’s sustainability coordinator as well as highlight programs from leading green campuses. COLLEGE OF DENTISTRY’S INAUGURAL HEALTH CAREERS PROGRAM TODAY

Today (5/16), 130 students from Deshler Elementary School - one of Columbus’ financially and economically disadvantaged schools - and their parents and teachers will get a glimpse of what it’s like to be a health care professional during the College of Dentistry’s inaugural Health Careers Program. Students attending the program will obtain a more direct look into the fields of dentistry, medicine and nursing from university experts. The event will begin in 1188 Postle Hall at 10 a.m. and will conclude at 12:45 p.m. The program is sponsored by the Delta Dental Foundation. Contact: kennedy.408@osu.edu or 292-6977

WEST CAMPUS BIKE PATH CLOSED FOR IMPROVEMENTS MAY 19-30

The university’s west campus bike path located between Carmack Road on the east and North Starr Road on the west will be closed for up to two weeks for improvements. The path will be milled and compacted and then new asphalt will be installed. Additionally, areas of the path will be elevated and drain tiles will be added to reduce standing water on the path; the entire path will be raised 1-2 inches and in low areas it will be raised 10-12 inches. BLACKWELL TO HOST INTERNATIONAL SHROUD CONFERENCE IN AUGUST

An international conference, "The Shroud of Turin: Perspectives on Multifaceted Enigma," will be held at the Blackwell Hotel Thursday (8/14)-Sunday (8/17). The conference is open to the public. Joseph Marino, library associate I in Serials/Electronic Resources/Rights Management at Ackerman Library and his wife, M. Sue Benford, who has a Masters in Health Education from OSU, have co-authored a paper, titled "Role of calcium carbonate in fiber discoloration on the Shroud of Turin," published in the March/April 2008 issue of Chemistry Today, a peer-reviewed journal published in Milan, Italy. NORMAN THOMAS LECTURE TACKLES WORLD ENERGY CRISIS

Ohio State Marion welcomes author and activist Harvey Wasserman to campus to present the 36th Annual Norman Thomas Memorial Lecture, “Getting to Solartopia and a Green-Powered Earth,” at noon Monday (5/19) in Maynard Hall’s Guthery Community Room. Wasserman will discuss how the world's energy crisis can be solved by a total conversion to a "Solartopian" economy based entirely on green power and efficiency. COMIC ARTIST AND OSU ALUM POPE TO GIVE TALK AT WEXNER

One of the most eclectic talents in comics, Ohio State alumnus Paul Pope will speak at the Wexner Center Film/Video Theater at 7 p.m. Tuesday (5/20). A book signing will follow. In addition to creating comics, Pope has branched out into the world of fashion, designing silk-screen prints and window displays for Diesel and his own line of clothes for DKNY Jeans. IRB FORMS HELP SESSION SET FOR MAY 21

Investigators, graduate students, and research staff are encouraged to attend a help session on IRB applications (e.g., initial review, continuing review, amendment, event reporting), from 3-4 p.m. Wednesday (5/21) in 113 Research Foundation. Office of Responsible Research Practices staff will answer questions. INTERNATIONAL PHOTOS ON DISPLAY IN THE SHORT NORTH

The Global Gallery in the Short North is exhibiting photographs from the 2007 Office of International Affairs photo competition. The photographs reflect themes on people, places and Buckeye Spirit taken by Ohio State students, faculty and staff when they have traveled abroad. The exhibit is open through Friday (6/20). The International Affairs photo exhibit is made available to schools, groups and community organizations to help educate people about other parts of the world. COLLEGE OF MEDICINE OFFERS HEALTH LITERACY WEBCAST

College of Medicine Outreach and Engagement will host an Institute for Healthcare Improvement three-part Webcast, "Health Literacy: New Methods for Patient Education and Self-Management Support," from 1-2:30 p.m. Wednesday (5/28), Wednesday (6/11) and Wednesday (6/25), in 106 Meiling Hall. VET MED ALUMNI GOLF OUTING TO RAISE SCHOLARSHIP MONEY

The College of Veterinary Medicine Alumni Society will hold its annual golf outing on Wednesday (6/4) at the Foxfire Golf Club in Lockbourne. Sponsored in part by the Ohio Veterinary Medical Association and the College of Veterinary Medicine, the event includes 18 holes of golf, lunch and a reception with dinner and awards. Fee of $90 includes a donation of $30 to the Veterinary Medicine Alumni Society Scholarship Fund. Register by Friday (5/23). A registration form is available online.
