OSU UNDERGRADUATES WIN NATION’S MOST PRESTIGIOUS AWARDS

Sixteen Ohio State undergraduates have won several of the nation’s most prestigious awards this year. OSU is the only institution in the country this year where students have been awarded both the nation’s premier academic award - the Rhodes Scholarship - and the maximum number of Goldwater Scholarships. Goldwater Scholars are top math, engineering and science students, and only four winners are allowed from any single university annually. In addition, two graduating seniors have been awarded Fulbright Grants for study abroad. Four OSU students will begin their graduate studies with National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowships, and two others are receiving fellowships from the Ohio Board of Regents. Read more >

SKUROW STUDENT VETERAN AWARD WINNERS RECOGNIZED

Seven Ohio State student veterans have been selected as winners of this year’s Arnold Skurow Student Veteran Award. The 2008 winners are John Coy, Stephanie D’Amico, Lisa Laughton, Timothy Mazik, Rachel Swansinger, Astrid Wade and Ashley Westbury. The award winners received recognition at the annual OSU Armed Forces Day luncheon on Thursday (5/15). Each recipient received a $500 award courtesy of the Campus Campaign, Veterans Affairs Fund. The student veteran award is named in honor of Arnold Skurow - a US Navy veteran and a key leader in helping disabled veterans and Vietnam-era veterans receive affirmative action rights. Read more >

STATISTICIAN TO PRESENT COMPUTER ALGORITHM FOR RESEARCH, ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

An upcoming lecture in the Department of Statistics should appeal to researchers who work with large, complex data sets, as well as anyone interested in the foundations of artificial intelligence. Jerome H. Friedman, an award-winning statistician at Stanford University, will be on campus Thursday (5/29) to deliver the Chhotey Lal and Mohra Devi Rustagi Memorial Lecture at 3:30 p.m. in 170 18th Avenue Building. TODAY: OSU SENR TALK TO LOOK AT SOIL, ECOLOGICAL RISK ASSESSMENT

Richard A. Hunter Anderson of Ohio State’s School of Environment and Natural Resources will present “Matrix Matters: The Modifying Effects of Soil Properties on Ecological Risk Assessment” at 3:30 p.m. today (5/22) by video link on the Columbus and Wooster campuses. Anderson is a doctoral student in SENR’s Soil Science Graduate Program under advisor Nicholas Basta, a professor of soil and environmental chemistry. MEMORIAL DAY HOLIDAY CABS SERVICE ANNOUNCED

UNIVERSITY POLICE JOIN CLICK IT OR TICKET CAMPAIGN

The OSU Police Division is partnering with more than 900 local law enforcement agencies in Ohio by participating in the 2008 Click It or Ticket Campaign, which runs through Sunday (6/1). OSU Police will foster awareness of seatbelt laws through education and increased enforcement. The data is clear, seatbelts save lives. In 2007 there were 482 fatalities on Ohio’s roads where motorists or passengers were unbelted. Please remember to buckle up and drive safe.

RUCKER TO DELIVER CAS LECTURE MAY 23

Walter Rucker, associate professor of African American and African Studies will present the final Center for African Studies brown bag lecture for spring quarter from noon-1 p.m. Friday (5/23) in 122 Oxley Hall. Rucker will deliver "The Gold Coast Diaspora in the Americas: Ethnogenesis, Resistance, and Culture." The talk analyzes one of many steps that Atlantic Africans took in the process of becoming African American in culture, orientation and identity. Contact: cas@osu.edu

COLLEGE OF MEDICINE OFFERS HEALTH LITERACY WEB CAST

College of Medicine Outreach and Engagement will host an Institute for Healthcare Improvement three-part Web cast, "Health Literacy: New Methods for Patient Education and Self-Management Support," from 1-2:30 p.m. Wednesday (5/28), Wednesday (6/11) and Wednesday (6/25), in 106 Meiling Hall. OSU HEARING PROFESSIONALS OPEN HOUSE MAY 22, 23

To celebrate Better Speech and Hearing Month, OSU Hearing Professionals is hosting an open house from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Thursday (5/22) and Friday (5/23) at the Dublin location (565 Metro Place South, Suite 400). Participants are invited to have a free hearing screening, learn more about hearing aids, and if appropriate receive a listening demonstration of the latest digital hearing aid technology.
