RESEARCHERS DEVELOPING RESISTANT ASH HYBRID FOR FUTURE REFORESTATION
Just like chestnut blight and Dutch elm disease before it, emerald ash borer is capable of wiping out an entire species of trees from North America, said Dan Herms, an entomologist with the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center and OSU Extension. That’s why Herms, Ohio’s representative on a U.S.-Canadian science advisory panel that makes recommendations on EAB, began looking at possible ways to preserve ash as a component of North American forests and landscapes from the onset of the infestation, just in case strategies to stop the spread of EAB failed.

OHIO STATE TEAM TAKES THIRD PLACE IN CHALLENGE X
A team of OSU College of Engineering students has placed third in the nation in a four-year, U.S. Department of Energy competition to improve automotive technology in engine efficiency and emissions. The Ohio State Reverb's final placing was announced at the conclusion of the Challenge X competition Wednesday (5/21) at the nation’s capitol. Ohio State is one of 16 universities selected to participate in the next competition, called EcoCAR: The NeXt Challenge, in which students must re-engineer a 2009 Saturn Vue to achieve improved fuel economy and reduced emissions while retaining the vehicle’s performance and consumer appeal. TODAY: RUCKER TO DELIVER CAS LECTURE
Walter Rucker, associate professor of African American and African Studies will present the final Center for African Studies brown bag lecture for spring quarter from noon-1 p.m. today (5/23) in 122 Oxley Hall. Rucker will deliver "The Gold Coast Diaspora in the Americas: Ethnogenesis, Resistance, and Culture." The talk analyzes one of many steps that Atlantic Africans took in the process of becoming African American in culture, orientation and identity. Contact: cas@osu.edu

UNIVERSITY HOURS FOR SUMMER BEGIN JUNE 9
University summer hours of 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. will begin on Monday (6/9). Hours of 8 a.m.-5 p.m. will resume on Tuesday (9/2). Many offices that serve students or the public remain open on Wednesdays from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. These offices should stay open on an as needed basis. However, if the decision is to discontinue extended hours for summer quarter, the official extended hours will resume on the first Wednesday of autumn quarter. These offices are responsible for communicating extended hours and any schedule changes to their customers.
SERVICE-LEARNING INFORMATION SOUGHT
Faculty and staff are encouraged to take the Faculty/Staff Service-Learning Involvement survey by Friday (6/13) to help document service-learning at Ohio State. The survey requests the following information: service-learning courses offered, professional development needs and interests related to service-learning, and scholarly work related to service-learning. INTRODUCTION TO SEXUAL HARASSMENT 101
Organization and Human Resource Consulting is conducting a workshop on Tuesday (6/3) about Sexual Harassment, an issue that affects faculty, staff and students. Workshop participants will review definitions and problem behaviors, determine what behaviors may be harassment, what to do when harassment occurs, and responsibilities of instructors, supervisors and leaders. TEACHING ABOUT THE HOLOCAUST: WORKSHOP FOR OHIO EDUCATORS
The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and the Hillel Center at Ohio State are hosting Teaching about the Holocaust: A Workshop for Ohio Educators from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Wednesday (8/6) at the Hillel Center. Register online by Monday (6/2). There is no registration fee. The workshop is designed for classroom and pre-service middle and high school social studies and language arts teachers, however other disciplines are welcome.
