Athletes with asthma need more help from their team trainers

 Very few athletic trainers associated with National Collegiate Athletic Association programs said that they were following best practice standards for managing asthma among their athletes, according to a new study. For athletes with asthma, the dangers of the condition can be as mild as impacting athletic performance or so severe to be incapacitating, or deadly. Lead author of the study, Jonathan Parsons, OSU clinical assistant professor of internal medicine and associate director of the Asthma Center at the OSU Medical Center, was assisted by OSU researchers Vincent Pestritto, Gary Phillips, Christopher Kaeding, Thomas Best, Gail Wadley and John Mastronarde. TYPE 2 DIABETES STUDY. The Department of Family Medicine is currently enrolling for a research study for Type 2 diabetics who are inadequately controlled when 1) taking metformin alone, or only one sulfonylurea drug, or 2) are currently not taking any medication for their diabetes. This study compares the effectiveness of treatment with Sitagliptin (Januvia™) and pioglitazone (Actos™) taken together compared to taking Sitagliptin (Januvia™) and pioglitazone (Actos™) separately. Ohio State Lima to induct new member into Hall of Fame

Ohio State Lima will induct the latest member of its Hall of Fame during a meeting of the Ohio State Lima Advocates at 11:30 a.m. today (5/1) in 160 Reed Hall. The induction will begin at approximately 11:50 a.m. The 2009 inductee is G. Gilbert Cloyd, retired Chief Technology Officer of Procter & Gamble and former chair of the OSU Board of Trustees. The Ohio State Lima Advocates group was formed by the Board of Trustees to engage past members and gain their insights and perspective on how Ohio State Lima can better serve its students and community. Dentistry offers free oral cancer exams today

Through the College of Dentistry’s annual Oral Cancer Screening Day, free exams will be offered from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. today (5/1) at the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic, second floor of Postle Hall. Appointments are not necessary. Anyone with a history of heavy drinking, smoking or smokeless tobacco use has an increased risk of developing oral cancer, but early detection is key to surviving. 'Thurber in the House' exhibit starts today

To recognize the Thurber House 25th anniversary, the OSU Rare Books and Manuscripts Library is offering "Thurber in the House," an exhibit of James Thurber's cartooning art that focuses on some of Thurber’s favorite subjects: men, women, sex and dogs. The RBMS collection, 29 archival quality facsimiles, will run Friday (5/1)-Sunday (9/6) at the Thurber Center, 91 Jefferson Ave., next door to Thurber House, and will be free and open daily, 1-4 p.m. Read more:

Franklin County Master Gardener Information Line

The Franklin County Master Gardeners, OSU Extension, Garden Information Line operates March 1-Oct. 31 each year. Questions answered about: trees and shrubs; lawns; flowers, vegetables and fruits; insect pests and more. Franklin Master Gardener volunteers will research your questions and respond to your request.

Office hours for help with IRB submissions

The Office of Responsible Research Practices holds office hours to help researchers prepare IRB submissions and exemption requests. These sessions are intended to help student and faculty researchers navigate IRB forms, policies and review procedures. The next session for biomedical/cancer researchers will be held from 2-4 p.m. Wednesday (5/6) in 635 Fry Hall. Domestic violence conference slated for May 27

The Region IV Perinatal Center and High Risk Perinatal Project’s Project SAFE, in conjunction with the Columbus Coalition Against Family Violence, will host "Teen Violence: A Closer Look," from 9:45 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Wednesday (5/27) at the Longaberger Alumni House. Topics include teen violence in relation to dating, gangs and cyberspace. The event is free through the support of the Columbus Coalition Against Family Violence. Register by Monday (5/11). OSU soccer: 8th annual Connor Senn Memorial Game May 5

The 8th annual Connor Senn Memorial Game features Ohio State men’s soccer vs. the 2008 MLS Champions the Columbus Crew, at 7 p.m. Tuesday (5/5) in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Tickets for adults are $5 and students are $3; all proceeds go to the Connor Senn Memorial Scholarship Fund.
