Medical Center program addresses psychological trauma

As the prevalence of stress and stress-related conditions increases and associated treatment costs escalate into the billions of dollars, the newly-created psychological trauma program at Ohio State University Medical Center serves as a resource for local community providers to address the needs of those suffering from untreated emotional trauma. The Medical Center plans to offer additional, trauma-specific staff training in the emergency department and surgical intensive care unit, work with patients and families in these areas and conduct workshops for staff and community-based service providers. TYPE 2 DIABETES STUDY. The Department of Family Medicine is currently enrolling for a research study for Type 2 diabetics who are inadequately controlled when 1) taking metformin alone, or only one sulfonylurea drug, or 2) are currently not taking any medication for their diabetes. This study compares the effectiveness of treatment with Sitagliptin (Januvia™) and pioglitazone (Actos™) taken together compared to taking Sitagliptin (Januvia™) and pioglitazone (Actos™) separately. University community invited to Denman Research Forum May 13

The Denman Undergraduate Research Forum will take place at the RPAC next week, from noon-3 p.m. Wednesday (5/13). SPEECH AND HEARING SCIENCE MEDICAL STUDY. The OSU Department of Speech and Hearing Science is currently recruiting individuals 60 to 90 years of age to participate in a project measuring speech understanding in background noise. Participants must have hearing loss in both ears and be in good health. Participation is voluntary. Today: Plate tectonics subject of OSU Marion Science Café

Ohio State Marion invites the community to Science Café, a free monthly community dialogue, to be held at 7 p.m. today (5/5) in the Infinity Restaurant in the Harding Hotel, 267 W. Teresa Mensing, School of Earth Sciences, will look at the scientific evidence geologists have gathered which documents the movements of the earth’s plates and how we have used our understanding of plate tectonics to solve a multitude of geologic mysteries. Weghorst talks cancer prevention at May 7 bike race event

The university community is encouraged to sign up to ride in the inaugural Pelotonia Bike Tour for Cancer Research, a 180-mile ride from Columbus to Athens and back, to be held Friday (8/28)-Sunday (8/30). President Gordon Gee, Senior Vice President for Health Sciences Steven Gabbe and Michael Caligiuri, CEO of The James headline a group touring campus to rustle up support — riders, sponsors and volunteers — for the cause. Christopher Weghorst, associate professor in the College of Public Health's Division of Environmental Health Sciences, is a featured speaker at the next event, set for 8:30 a.m. Thursday (5/7) in the Faculty Club Grand Lounge. Double feature: An Exploration of Mind, Memory and Dream

Architect Smiljan Radic is KSA lecture series guest May 7

Smiljan Radic Clarke, a graduate of the Universidad Católica de Chile, is the next KSA Confluence Lecture Series guest at 5:30 p.m. Thursday (5/7) in Knowlton Hall. In 2001, he was named best national architect under the age of 35 by the Chilean Architects Association. Clarke is currently working freelance in association with the sculptor Marcela Correa in Santiago de Chile. The event is free and open to the public.
