Spotlight on ... Melton Center for Jewish Studies

The Melton Center for Jewish Studies offers 200 interdisciplinary courses that comprise Jewish studies at Ohio State. In coordination with nine affiliated academic departments and represented by 30 professors, the Melton Center oversees Jewish studies majors, minors, and graduate students and offers a variety of scholarships. The center hosts academic conferences, attracts visiting scholars, and provides financial support for study in Israel. In addition, it orchestrates diverse educational programs and cultural events for the university and the larger Columbus community. Such offerings include concerts, films, panel discussions, and lectures on topics as varied as Jewish participation in the Civil Rights movement to twentieth century Israeli composers. The Melton Center was the first center of its kind established at any American public university. TYPE 2 DIABETES STUDY. The Department of Family Medicine is currently enrolling for a research study for Type 2 diabetics who are inadequately controlled when 1) taking metformin alone, or only one sulfonylurea drug, or 2) are currently not taking any medication for their diabetes. This study compares the effectiveness of treatment with Sitagliptin (Januvia™) and pioglitazone (Actos™) taken together compared to taking Sitagliptin (Januvia™) and pioglitazone (Actos™) separately. Ohio State President Gordon Gee will visit the Ohio State Lima campus today (5/6) to meet with students, staff, faculty and community members throughout the day. HPV INVESTIGATIONAL STUDY. Are you a healthy female aged 16-26 and not received a marketed HPV vaccine in the past? If so, you may be eligible to participate in an investigational study on Human papillomavirus (HPV) – a virus that can lead to genital warts and cervical cancer in women. The study involves up to 42 months of participation. Participants will receive free exams, PAP smears, Vaccine, and will be compensated for time and travel. Deborah A. Ruffolo to receive College of Pharmacy Lifetime Achievement Award

Robert R. Ruffolo, Jr., will receive the College of Pharmacy’s Lifetime Achievement Award at the College of Pharmacy Annual Alumni Awards Banquet, from 6-10 p.m. Friday (5/8), for his contributions to drug discovery and the science and academic communities. Glenn School Award honors Delaware senator

Sen. Tom Carper of Delaware, a 1968 OSU graduate, will receive the 19th annual Excellence in Public Service Award given by the John Glenn School of Public Affairs today (5/6) in Washington, D.C. The award is given each year to an individual who has had significant impact on public service at the local, national or international level throughout his or her career. Carper sits on the Senate Finance Committee, Environment and Public Works Committee, and Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. May 9: Ohio State hosts 61st annual State Science Day

More than 1,100 aspiring science, technology, engineering and mathematics students in grades 7-12 from across Ohio will exhibit their science research projects at the 61st annual State Science Day, hosted by Ohio State in the French Field House on Saturday (5/9). Next Pelotonia Bike Tour promo set for May 8

The university community is encouraged to sign up to ride in the inaugural Pelotonia Bike Tour for Cancer Research, a 180-mile ride from Columbus to Athens and back, to be held Friday (8/28)-Sunday (8/30). President Gordon Gee will lead several campus events in May to rustle up support — riders, sponsors and volunteers — for the cause. The next is set for 8:30 a.m. Friday (5/8) in the Hitchcock Hall Conference Room. May 9 panel discussion to examine death penalty

Race, politics and the geography of Ohio’s death penalty will be the topic of a panel discussion from 2-4 p.m. Saturday (5/9) at the Moritz College of Law, Saxbe Auditorium. “Perspectives on Ohio’s Death Penalty,” hosted by The Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity at OSU, will examine this issue from various viewpoints. The panel includes Doug Berman, William B. Saxbe Designated Professor at Moritz College of Law.
