OSU furthering economic development efforts in West Africa

Ohio State is among a small group of institutions of higher education across the nation to receive a federal grant to further economic development efforts throughout Africa. FAES researchers are leading an effort to develop a West African agro-ecology program for sustainable food production. The initiative, in partnership with Universite Gaston Berger in Senegal, Africa, was chosen for an Africa-U.S. Higher Education Initiative Planning grant by the U.S. Agency for International Development and the Higher Education for Development. The project is co-directed by Richard Dick, a professor with OSU's School of Environment and Natural Resources, and Mateugue Diack of Universite Gaston Berger. Today: Gallaudet president to discuss Trends in the Deaf Student Population

Robert Davila, the ninth President of Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., will lecture on the “Trends in the Deaf Student Population and Higher Education” from 11 a.m.-noon today (5/8) in 100 Mendenhall. Gallaudet University is the world’s only liberal arts college for the deaf and hard-of-hearing. The lecture is free and open to the public with interpreting services provided. State Route 315 project update

Work will begin on SR 315 at 8 p.m. today (5/8) and continue until Monday (5/11) at 5 a.m. The inside left lanes on both SR 315 north and southbound will be closed. Two lanes of traffic will be maintained in each direction. This work is necessary to prepare for the traffic switch next month. The West North Broadway ramp to 315 southbound will also be shut down from 8 p.m. Monday-5 a.m. Tuesday. The ramp closure is for safety purposes. On Tuesday (5/12), from 8 p.m.-5 a.m., one lane of SR 315 southbound from Ackerman Road to Lane Avenue will be shut down. Two lanes of traffic will be maintained. May 9 panel discussion to examine death penalty

Race, politics and the geography of Ohio’s death penalty are the topic of a panel discussion from 2-4 p.m. Saturday (5/9) at the Moritz College of Law, Saxbe Auditorium. “Perspectives on Ohio’s Death Penalty,” hosted by The Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity at OSU, will examine this issue from various viewpoints. The panel includes Doug Berman, William B. Saxbe Designated Professor at Moritz College of Law. Andrew Grant-Thomas, deputy director of the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity, will serve as moderator. Read more: http://kirwaninstitute.org/

Social Responsibility Initiative kicks off week of sustainability activities May 11

Ohio State's Social Responsibility Initiative will kick off a week of sustainability activities on Monday (5/11). Rich Pirog, associate director of Iowa State University's Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture, will commence activities with a talk about local foods at a Monday brown-bag lunch in 105 Agricultural Administration Building. The event is open to the public. Desserts provided. Other events include a student and faculty panel discussion on sustainable food system efforts and opportunities at Ohio State at noon Tuesday (5/12) in 111 Agricultural Administration Building. Next Pelotonia Bike Tour promo set for May 11

The university community is encouraged to sign up to ride in the inaugural Pelotonia Bike Tour for Cancer Research, a 180-mile ride from Columbus to Athens and back, to be held Friday (8/28)-Sunday (8/30). President Gordon Gee will lead several campus events in May to help recruit riders, sponsors and volunteers. The next is set for noon-1 p.m. Monday (5/11) in the College of Veterinary Medicine Wexner Auditorium. Those who register and participate in the bike tour in August will be eligible to earn Incentive Program points through OSU’s Your Plan for Health. The OSU Center for Clinical and Translational Science will present a Biomedical Informatics Distinguished Guest Lecture featuring Ruoming Jin, assistant professor of Computer Science at Kent State University, at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday (5/12) in the Biomedical Research Tower, Room 115. May 14: OSU public lecture reveals the physics of Angels & Demons

As the Friday (5/15) release of the motion picture Angels & Demons approaches, across the U.S. and Canada scientists from more than 30 colleges, universities and national labs are hosting public lectures as part of the “Angels & Demons Lecture Nights: The Science Revealed” event. OSU physics professors Richard Hughes and Brian Winer will give a public lecture at 7 p.m. Thursday (5/14) in the Smith Seminar Room of the Physics Research Building. May 15: Conference on Climate Change and Livelihoods in SubSaharan Africa

The John Glenn School of Public Policy will host a conference on Climate Change and Livelihoods in SubSaharan Africa, on Friday (5/15) in the Leadership Education Center, 130 Page Hall. The workshop focuses on climate change and its interaction with African systems of crop and animal agriculture. Lu to present Statistical Methods for Observational Studies Seminar Series lecture

Bo Lu, OSU assistant professor in the Division of Biostatistics, College of Public Health, will present “Propensity Scores Adjustment in Observational Studies” from 2-3 p.m. Friday (5/15) in the Ross Heart Hospital Conference Room 1215. Lu’s major research interest is causal inference in observational studies with propensity score based approach. MBI to host multiphysics modeling seminar May 20

OSU's Mathematical Biosciences Institute will host a free multiphysics modeling seminar from 10 a.m.-noon Wednesday (5/20) in 355 Jennings Hall. Check out COMSOL's capabilities and get a sneak peak at their upcoming release, version 4. New flat addressing requirements adopted by US Postal Service

Effective Sunday (3/29), new address placement and formatting requirements adopted by the US Postal Service® were implemented for Periodicals, Standard Mail, BouPrinted Matter, Media Mail, and Library Mail flat size pieces sent at automation, presorted or carrier route prices. USPS also adopts related revisions for automation and presorted First-Class Mail flats. Read more:
