In this charming solo show, Hughes serves up a blend of humor and touching passages about life’s mysteries as he recounts the death of a neighbor’s bunny. Givens receives Bette Ann Harris '83 Distinguished Alumni Award
Deborah L. Givens, received the Bette Ann Harris Distinguished Alumni Award, the highest form of recognition awarded to an alumna or alumnus by the Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions, for leadership and research contributions to the field. Today: Faculty Council hosts semester calendar forum
Faculty Council of the University Senate reminds the entire campus community that the first of three open forums on the newly proposed semester calendar will be held from 3:30-5:30 p.m. today (5/12) in 130 Drinko Hall. The next two forums will occur from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Friday (5/15) and 11:30 a.m-1:30 p.m. Monday (5/18) — also in 130 Drinko Hall. Ohio State to host 3,000 sixth-grade students today for Baseball Day
More than 3,000 sixth-grade students from nearly 30 Columbus City Schools will visit Ohio State today (5/12) for “Baseball Day.” OSU and Columbus State Community College are joining with the school district for the event, which begins with a high-energy program at 10 a.m. in the Schottenstein Center followed by a Buckeye baseball game vs. Eastern Michigan at 12:05 p.m. at Bill Davis Stadium. Center for Emergent Materials call for Seed Funding Program proposals
The Center for Emergent Materials is calling for proposals to the Seed Funding Program to provide funding for research that broadens the scope of the CEM by developing into areas of strategic interest to the materials community. The application deadline is Wednesday (7/1), with an anticipated start date on or about Tuesday (9/1). Today: Donald S. Lopez on 'Building a Better Buddha'
The Center for the Study of Religion will sponsor a lecture by Donald S. Lopez, University of Michigan at 4:30 p.m. today (5/12) in 090 Science and Engineering Library. The lecture will trace the transformation of the Buddha from an idol with many forms to a historical human idolized for his ethical teachings. The lecture is free and all are welcome. Award-winning documentary, discussion at OSU Newark today
New Orleans journalist, author and filmmaker Lolis Eric Elie’s award-winning documentary, Faubourg Tremé: The Untold Story of Black New Orleans, will be shown from 12:45-3 p.m. today (5/12), in the Alford Performing Arts Hall in the Reese Center, followed by a question and answer session with the filmmaker. Pulitzer Prize winner to keynote military history conference; RSVP by May 13
Pulitzer Prize-winning author and former Washington Post correspondent Rick Atkinson will deliver the keynote address, "Writing the Liberation Trilogy," his history of the American Army in North Africa, Italy, and Western Europe during World War II, at the Military Frontiers graduate symposium at 1 p.m. Friday (5/15) at the Mershon Center for International Security Studies. OSU Marion: Annual Norman Thomas Lecture examines housing & credit crisis
Ohio State Marion welcomes Bill Faith, community activist and advocate for the homeless and low income housing, to the Marion campus at noon Thursday (5/14) in Maynard Hall’s Guthery Community Room. Faith will present the 37th Annual Norman Thomas Memorial Lecture, "The Housing Crisis and the Credit System." The lecture is free and open to the public. Ohio State research on view at COSI; festivities set for May 16
College of Education and Human Ecology faculty and students will conduct research at COSI in the new state-of-the-art “Labs in Life” that open to the public Saturday (5/16). View Ohio State life sciences studies in the first active, working research labs in a science museum. The public is invited to join President Gordon Gee, OSU cheerleaders and Brutus Buckeye for opening festivities from noon-1 p.m. Saturday. May 14: Latin American expert to speak on Bolivian democracy
Eduardo Gamarra, professor of comparative politics, Latin America, and the Caribbean at Florida International University, will discuss "Evo Morales, Bolivian Democracy, and U.S. Policy: Still on the Brink?" at noon Thursday (5/14) at the Mershon Center for International Security Studies. Gamarra is author of more than 40 articles and several books, including Revolution and Reaction: Bolivia 1964-1985, Latin American Political Economy in the Age of Neoliberal Reform, and Democracy Markets and Structural Reform in Latin America. Take Back The Night event set for May 14
Take Back The Night, a large-scale event raising awareness about violence against women, will take place Thursday (5/14), starting at 5 p.m. at the Wexner Center Plaza,15th Avenue and High Street). The event includes a Clothesline Project display, rally with speakers and live bands, survivor speak-outs, a march and men's programming. Refreshments provided. All are welcome.
