Obituary photos suggest growing bias against aging faces

A new study that looked at obituary photographs published in one metropolitan newspaper suggests that Americans may have become more biased toward youthful appearance, particularly for women. The study found that the number of obituary photographs showing the deceased at a much younger age than when he or she died more than doubled between 1967 and 1997. The findings suggest that we were less accepting of aging in the 1990s than we were back in the 60s, said assistant professor of social work Keith Anderson, who co-authored the study with Jina Han, a graduate student in social work at Ohio State. 2009 Distinguished Undergraduate Research Mentor Awards

The Undergraduate Research Office applauds the winners of the 2009 Distinguished Undergraduate Research Mentor Awards: Janet Box-Steffensmeier (Political Science); David Denlinger (Entomology); James Gregory (Aerospace Engineering); Charles Massey (Art); and, Narasimham Parinandi (Medicine) for their exceptional efforts on behalf of undergraduate researchers at Ohio State.

Denman Undergraduate Research Forum winners recognized

Congratulations to the 2009 Denman Undergraduate Research Forum winners. More than 500 students presented their research on Wednesday (5/13) in 11 categories making this the largest and most competitive Denman Forum ever. Doctoral Program Review: A One-Year Progress Report

In April 2008, the Graduate School released the Doctoral Program Assessment and Plan, the most comprehensive review of doctoral programs ever undertaken by a university the size and stature of Ohio State. This year our university-wide doctoral program review posted its first results, including steps that have been taken to increase visibility and national recognition of doctoral education at Ohio State. New episode of iMix airs on Big Ten Network

A new episode of iMix will air on the Big Ten Network at 10:30 p.m. today (5/18), 2 p.m. Tuesday (5/19), and 11:30 a.m. Friday (5/22). Hosted by Chris Forbes, this episode will feature the relationship between OSU and NASA; Ohio State aerospace engineering students conducting experiments in zero gravity aboard NASA’s “Weightless Wonder”; Ohio State’s work on a Lunar GPS-like system to be used by astronauts on the moon; and a web project, Synchronous Objects for One Flat Thing. World-renowned primate artist to speak on May 21

The Department of Anthropology’s annual Bourguignon Lecture in Art and Anthropology featuring Stephen Nash, primate artist and scientific illustrator, Conservation International on “The History of Primate Imagery,” takes place at 6 p.m. Thursday (5/21) in 002 Psychology Building. Nash’s artwork for conservation education and biological publications has been called “the taxonomic gold standard”– making his work the most widely recognized of any primate artist. Lemeshow to present Center for Clinical and Translational Science lecture

Stanley Lemeshow, dean of the College of Public Health, will present “Controlling for Confounding and Effect Modification: Stratified Analysis vs. Logistic Regression,” from 10-11 a.m. Friday (5/22) in room M008 Starling Loving Hall. The talk will review several available methods for combining information over strata and compares that approach to an analysis based on use of the logistic regression model.
