Study: Americans choose media messages that agree with their views

 A new OSU study provides some of the strongest evidence to date that Americans prefer to read political articles that agree with the opinions they already hold. Researchers found that people spent 36 percent more time reading articles that agreed with their point of view than they did reading text that challenged their opinions. Results of the study, conducted by Silvia Knobloch-Westerwick, associate professor of communication and Jingbo Meng, a former master’s degree student, appear in the June 2009 issue of the journal Communication Research. Beckman Young Investigators applications not accepted until further notice

The Office of Research announces that the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation will not be accepting applications for the Beckman Young Investigators Program until further notice. Work on SR 315 set for 8 p.m. today-11 p.m. Saturday

The following work is planned for SR 315. All work is weather dependent, and may be postponed or cancelled without prior notice. Beginning at 8 p.m. today (5/29) through 11 p.m. Saturday (5/30) the left lane of SR 315 south will be closed between Lane Avenue and I-670 for median work to prepare for the traffic switch next month. The focus of this roundtable discussion is on alternatives for communicating research findings to audiences beyond the borders of academia and policymaking. Office hours for help with IRB submissions

The Office of Responsible Research Practices holds office hours to help researchers prepare IRB submissions and exemption requests. These sessions are intended to help student and faculty researchers navigate IRB forms, policies and review procedures. The next session for biomedical/cancer researchers will be held from 2-4 p.m. Wednesday (6/3) in 635 Fry Hall. Safe Summer provides homes for pets students can't take with them

The “Safe Summer” program is offering alternatives for college students who are leaving for the summer and have a pet they cannot take with them. Created by the Shelter Medicine Club of the OSU College of Veterinary Medicine, Safe Summer is run by students and volunteers, and will be available through Friday (6/19). Last year, volunteers found homes for 100 percent of the animals surrendered to the program. Interested students should e-mail mailto:safesummer@osu.edu. Franklin County Master Gardeners featured on Columbus NBC4 news

Franklin County Master Gardeners continue to be active in the gardens at the recently re-opened Holton Recreation Center on the Hilltop (Columbus' west side). Volunteers have worked for a number of years to establish the gardens and to create youth gardening programs for area residents. The Master Gardeners include Peggy Murphy, Michael Leach, Linda Readey, and Rita Burns. NBC4 News recently interviewed Murphy and the children working in the Holton gardens. View online at:
