Collage animator Lewis Klahr, a Wexner Center Residency Award artist, is holding a free public “masterclass” at 4 p.m. today (5/4), in which he’ll lead a shot-by-shot tour of one of his best-known animations. He will also introduce Engram Sepals (Melodramas 1994–2000), a series of seven short films, Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Film/Video Theater. It’s all part of a month long celebration of Klahr’s work. Ohio State professor recognized by American Physiological Society

Paul M. L. Janssen, associate professor of physiology and cell biology at Ohio State, recently received the Henry Pickering Bowditch Memorial Award by the American Physiological Society, presented to scientists younger than 42 years of age whose accomplishments are original and outstanding. In his research, Janssen has focused on the mechanisms that affect how the heart relaxes between beats, and has found several proteins and protein modifications that could play a role in the process. Tiny particles may help surgeons by marking brain tumors

Researchers have developed a way to enhance how brain tumors appear in MRI scans and during surgery, making the tumors easier for surgeons to identify and remove.

Scientists at Ohio State are experimenting with different nanoparticles that they hope may one day be injected into the blood of patients and help surgeons remove lethal brain tumors known as glioblastomas. The strategy is combining two particles that contain different properties to make one particle with multiple properties, explained Jessica Winter, assistant professor in chemical and biomolecular engineering and biomedical engineering at Ohio State. Are you or do you know a female who has asthma? If so, you or they may qualify for a study being conducted at the Ohio State University Medical Center. This clinical trial is examining the differences between female asthmatics that either do or do not have worsening of symptoms during their menstrual cycle. Twenty five people will participate in this study. Participants will receive up to $150 for their participation. The results may point the way to more effective methods to control asthma. RESEARCH STUDY. The OSU Division of Periodontology is conducting a study on wound healing of the gums (gingiva) of smokers. To be accepted as a volunteer participant you must: be a smoker for 5 or more years, 21-50 years old, in good health, and be available for one screening and 8 study visits. Office of Research Symposium Series - Research and the Global University

 Nina Fedoroff, science and technology adviser to the U.S. Secretary of State and USAID will address the use of science as diplomatic policy, and ways that collaborative university research can magnify influence and resources to achieve key results, at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday (5/5) in the Faculty Club. Latin American Film Series continues May 5 with María Antonia

The Center for Latin American Studies will screen the Cuban film María Antonia on Wednesday (5/5) as part of the spring quarter Latin American Film Series, Cuban Cinema: Then and Now. The film is set in Cuba during the early 1950s, and follows the love story of a prostitute and a boxer, and her devotion to him as he gains money and popularity among women.  William Hitchcock, professor of history at Temple University, will deliver "Liberation: The Human Cost of Allied Victory in World War II Europe" at noon Tuesday (5/11) at the Mershon Center for International Security Studies. Hitchcock’s book, The Bitter Road to Freedom: A New History of the Liberation of Europe (Free Press, 2009), was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and won the 2009 George Louis Beer Prize from the American Historical Association.
