Ride Pelotonia. Cure cancer. Win a car.

Ohio State will sponsor a series of rider recruitment events in the coming weeks for Pelotonia 2010, the bike tour that raises money for research at the OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center - James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute. Each event will include information on riding in, volunteering for or donating to Pelotonia (100 percent of every dollar raised goes directly to cancer research at the OSUCCC - James), as well as music, special guests and fundraising ideas. Food and beverages also will be available.

To encourage OSU employees to consider riding in Pelotonia 2010, all faculty and staff who register to ride will be eligible to win a 2010 Honda Accord, donated by CompManagement Inc. of Dublin, or a new Giant Defy Advanced 2 bicycle valued at $2,300, donated by Your Plan 4 Health and roll: bicycle shops of Columbus. The first three events will be Wednesday (5/26) at the Biomedical Research Tower, Thursday (5/27) on the plaza in front of Rhodes Hall at the Medical Center, and Friday (5/28) at the Ohio Union. OVERWEIGHT? STRESSED? THINK THERE’S A CONNECTION? OSU researchers are looking for healthy MEN ONLY, ages 35-65, who are overweight (body mass index 30-34). You may be reimbursed up to $415 for participation in research on how psychological stress boosts the unhealthy effects of fast foods in ways that could promote obesity and heart disease. Participation involves a screening visit (2.5 hours) and two 9 hour study days at the OSU Medical Center. Fill out an online application at www.stressandhealth.org (click on Research Studies).

University Memorial Service set for May 26

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday (5/26) to remember the Ohio State students who died during this school year. The service will be held in the Ohio Union in the Davis Foundation Interfaith Prayer and Reflection Room. The annual nondenominational service is co-sponsored by the University Interfaith Association and the Student Advocacy Center. Online Student Evaluation of Instruction activated March 22

The Student Evaluation of Instruction (SEI) is Ohio State's most widely-used method to collect student ratings of instructors, and it is now entirely online. Students access the evaluations through their class schedules on the web. Detailed information about SEIs was e-mailed to instructors on Thursday (5/20) and to students on Saturday (5/22). Because the evaluations are completed outside of the classroom, instructors are encouraged to remind students of the importance and relevance of SEIs often. New major in public affairs a first for the Glenn School and Ohio State

For the first time in school history, undergraduates at Ohio State can now major in public affairs. This fall the John Glenn School of Public Affairs will launch a Bachelor of Arts degree program aimed at undergraduates with a passion for public service. Today: Ottoman Lecture Series explores the Reign of Suleyman

Kaya Sahin of Tulane University will discuss "Empire on Display: Ceremonies During the Reign of Suleyman" at 3:30 p.m. today (5/24) in 136 Jennings Hall. Sahin will focus on three celebrations: Ibrahim Pasha’s wedding in 1524, and Ottoman princes’ circumcisions in 1530 and 1539. WOSU broadcasts live from the Wetland Research Park

May 27: Student engineers host President Gee at Design Showcase

President E. Gordon Gee and interim College of Engineering Dean Greg Washington will speak at this year’s Engineering Capstone Design Showcase at 2 p.m. Thursday (5/27) at Thompson Library. Nearly 50 teams of senior engineering students will display their design projects. Ohio State’s Engineering Education Innovation Center and steel industry leader ArcelorMittal are hosting the event, open to the public from noon-3 p.m. Door prizes will be raffled off. College of Engineering hosts two events on May 27

The College of Engineering is hosting the following events on Thursday (5/27):

  • Fundamentals of Engineering for Honors Nanotechnology Poster Presentation, from noon-3 p.m. in 260 Thompson Library, involves 10 teams of first-year engineer¬ing students who have designed and fabricated a silicone polymer microfluidics lab-on-a-chip to analyze surface feature effects on cell adhesion.
  • Fundamentals of Engineering for Honors Robot Competition, from 4-6 p.m. in St. John Arena, involves more than 50 teams of first-year engineering students who have designed and built autonomous robots to navigate a course and perform tasks associated with sustainable energy systems.
